The Teachers' Institute for Pen der is closed. The session was both pleasant and profitable, jrhe wis dom of the law-makers in establish ing them has already been -indicated. It was a happy thought to bring the institute's to the 'teachers' rather than! have the, teachers go to the institutes. As a class Ithey are too poor and too poorly paid to af ford such luxuries. . Under the pres ent system more teachers will be reached, and consequently more good accomplished than under the old way. j The institute for Pender was held at Burgaw. It began Monday, Aug 3th, and ended Friday, Aug. 5th. It was called by Superintendent Jas. F. Moore, and conducted by Superintendent M. C. S. Noble, of the Wilmington Public Schools Prof. Noble fully sustained his al ready enviable reputation as an educator. Asian instructor he is decidedly unique a veritable sui generis, r He is richly gifted with 'saving common sense,"and posseses a wonderful kneak for importing what he knows. Taking a cue from the idea of hrinerincr the institute to the teachers we organized l a Pender County Teachers' Association for whites, to meet either annually or $emi-ans nually. We propose to make it an itinerant body, holding ' sessions of two days in the different townships. In this way we hope to reach the committeemen and the patrons and thereby enlighten and enlist them in the cause of " education. At night we had lectures. Dr. S. S. Satch well spoke, his subject being "Th e Christian Heart a Promoter of Lon gevity," which is but another state ment for "The wicked shall not live out half his days." Like everything we have seen from the Doctor's pen, it was rich in thought and diction. Dr. Walter C. Murphy lectured on "Human Physiology," Dr. Sanders on "Drinking Water," and Dr. Buie gave an extemporaneous talk on VGeology." i I wish I , had space to do justice to the efforts of each of these gentlemen. On Thursday night there was a and a good . time forv the young folks. At the close of the institute the lad vj teachers thereof presented to Prof. Noble a bouquet of beautiful flowers, tastefully ar ranged. The presentation was made by one who shall be nameless here, and was responded to by Prof.Noble in a neat little speech in which hu- , mor and pathos were happily blend ed.
