at Wallace, generally known; as
Duplin Roads. A correspondent at
that place writes us to this effect
and he says that about one hundred
of the best citizens of the town and
surrounding j country have signed
the petition! lie says: "There is
not a village on tlie line of the W.
& W. R. R. ' wfrere the society is
better than at Duplin Roads, and a
more kind hearted, generous, char
itable peoplej I does j not exist any
where. It is a thriving village, 36 j
miles from Wilmington, and a large
amount of business is done here.
The present 'warehouse is too small
for the business and we believe that guilty, $10 or 30 days in the
Capt. Divine will heed our request, jail
a
half from the latter. It is said that
the station will be located at the
fork, where. the old county I road
and the Mt. Misery roads meet!

Defined Duties.
The duties of the J3oard of Public
Charities, the members of which
were appointed ikst Saturday by
Governor Fowle are thus defined by
section 2271, chapter 2, volume 2 of
the Code:
"The Board of Public Charities
and the members of the General
Assembly shall be ex officio visitors
of all insane asylums. It shall be
the duty of the Board of Public
Charities to visit the asylums from
time to time, as thev may deem ex
pedient, to examine into their con
dition and make report thereon to
the General Assembly, with such
suggestions and remarks as they
mav think Droner. And to said
Board, and to the Board of Direc
tors of his Asylum, and to the Gen
eral Assembly only, shall each
Superintendent be required to make
reports or furnish statistics.
A Ducking for the Ducks.
Mr. James Bowden, of Summer's
Rest, was out sailing yesterday at
Wrightsville with four young ladie? ,
two daughters of Capt; Manning

of Capt. Tribou, of the Clyde line.
When in the Banks Channel a flaw
of wind struck the boat and I she
capsized in ten j feet of water. The
Misses Manning are excellent swims

mind. They were on tho bottom of
the boat and clinging to it by one
hand while bv the other each held
and supported one of the other
young ladies, before Mr. Bowden
could reach them. Capt. John H.
Daniel, Mr. Martin Daniels and
Messrs. Raymond Nolan and Sam
nel Bauersfelt went to their assist
ance in the yacht Vixen and rescued
them from their uncomfortable po
sition. !

Confederate Veterans.
The adjourned meeting of Confed
erate Veterans of ! New Hanover
county, held last night at the Cowrt
House, was well attended.
Col. E. D. Hall called the meeting
to order.
Col. DeRossetjfromthe committee
on organization, reported a form of
constitution for the "Confederate
Veterans Associa tion of New Han
over County',1' which after some
amendments, was adopted.
A motion was adopted that the
constitution may be amended or re g gQQ
pealed by a two third vote of those , Vfn

An ameAtlment that no fees or
dues shall be paid by any disabled
member was adopted, but on motion
of Mr. Heinsberger was reconsider 1
ed, when it was moved and adopted
that any member may be exempted
from payment of dues or fees by the
executive committee.
The officers are to be elected an
nually at the regular meeting in
April, and shall consist of a com
mander, first and second vice com
manders, a secretary and treas urer,
and assistant secretary and treas
urer. An election for offices was held,
which resulted as follows:

The Merry Burglar.
George Lucas and James Jones
are the names of the two worthy
colored men who assisted in the ar rest
of the burglar, David Wiggs,
on Tuesday morning. They espied
the fellow and thinking his move-,
ments susocious they watched him
and were present and assisted in the
arrest. Wiggs is in jail yet. Some
of the articles have been identified
among other things the dresses.
The silk dress belonged to Mrs.
Geo. Lewis and was stolen from her
house. .
A clored woman bv the name of
Milley. Walker was arrested this
morning on the charge of having
some of the stolen sroods in her
possession and was an accomplice of
the burglar.
