There will be good music for" dancing and fireworks also. The Grove will leave at 5 o'clock and the Passport at 7. The fare is only 25 cents. The Remedy Is Easy. There is complaint about the street sweeping. As it is the dust is swept up dry and as a consequence it per vades everything. On Saturday last the sweepers were at work on South Front street, during the busiest hours of the day, and more than one person got some of it in his Sunday dinner. The remedy is easy. The streets should be sprinkled before they are swept. The Island Reach HoteT Mr. Horace Piatt has resigned the Island Beach Hotel into the hands of the Seacoast R. R. Co. and has made an assignment to Capt. J. R. Nolan for the benefit of his creditors. The announcement will cause surprise as the general im pression has been that the hotel has done a good business this season. The house will be kept open, how ever, and Capt. Nolan, on behalf of the Company, will see that it is well kept. An official announcement to this effect will be made in a day or two, probably to morrow. Fatal Accident. A dreadful accident occurred at Messrs. Parsley & Wiggins' steam sawmill, at Hilton, on Saturday evening, shortly after our paper had been issued. Mr. J. Davenport, the sawyer, attempted to adjust a belt which had slipped from a pulley and his sleeve was caught in the belt and he was dragged up above the floor. As soon as possible the machinery was stopped and the an fortunate man was released, but his injuries were seen at a glance to be fatal. His right arm was drawn from the socket and his left arm was broken and mutilated. Dr. Wright was telephoned for and arrived at the mill in a very short time but nothing could be done and the un fortunate man died a few minutes after the arrival of the physician. Mr. Davenport was about 35 years old and was unmarried. He came here from Suffolk, Va., and had been employed at the mill only about two weeks, where he had eriven ereneral satisfaction. An in- 7 quest was deemed unnecessary. ' Freeman-Cowan File Uo. We are pleased to know that the Atlantic Coast Line has adopted the Freeman-Cowan File as the most useful device for filing and posting rates under the Inter State Coin merce law. Mr, Stephen G. Cowan, the Presi dent of the Company, is a native Wilmingtonian and we wish him the greatest possible success. He now occupies the position of Chief Assistant in the Division Freight and Passenger Agent's office of the Richmond & Danville Railroad, at Richmond, having years of fruitful experience in this line of railroad ing. We understand that Mr. Cowan does not give up his railroad business, but simply accepts the position of President of the File Company because he is a principal stockholder and the device is largely of his own invention. From what we have heard of the file, we think its very general adop tion only ft question of time, a large proportion of the Northern roads having already placed them in use. Again Jwe wish our friend, Mr. Cowan, success with his invention. The place of manufacture is in Richmond, Va. . Don't Read This for S50O. For many years, through nearly every newspaper in the land, the proprietors of Dr. Sage's Catarrh Remedy, who are thoroughly re sponsible, financially, as any one can easily ascertain by" proper en quiry, have offered, in good faith, a standing reward of-$500 for a case of nasal catarrh, no matter how bad, or of how long standing, which they cannot cure. - A Sunday School Robbed. When the Sunday School of St. John's Church was opened yester day afternoon it was found that some one had robbed the mite chest. There was considerable money in it but it is not known how much. The chest was locked up in a closet. The thief broke into the closet by forcing the lock on the door. There is no clue as yet but ! the robbery must have been perpetrated by soma one who knew that the money was there. ".'"-' '"' I L : . Saturday Night's Fire. The alarm of fire about 9 o'clock on Saturday night came from the store No. 10 Market street, recently occupied by Mr. Samuel Bear. Mr. Bear had recently transpoid much of his .stock to his new store but there were still a number of articles stored there. The fire was soon suppressed by the Department. There is about $500 loss on the stock, which was uninsured, and perhaps the same amount on the building which was owned by Mr. L. Vollers and which was insured with Messrs. Northrop, Hodges & Taylor, in the Royal Insurance Co. of Liverpool for $2,000. No one' knows the cause of the fire. A Handsome Publication. From Mr. Jno. M. Rose, Secretary of the Cape Fear & Yadkin Valley R. R., we have received a copy of a very handsome publication, just is sued in book form, descriptive of the road from Mt. Airy, at the base of the Blue Ridge, to this -city. It is handsomely illustrated with a num ber of beautiful views, all true to nature, because all are made from photographs. The City Hall here is shown up in all of its handsome proportions and a picture of the moss-covered oaks at Hilton and one of surf bathing on the coast near the city are thoroughly realistic. In all there are 29 beautiful full page engravings and a forge map show ine the line of the railway and its connections. ! The Fire Teams. Barnev. the horse belonging to W. S. F. E. Co. No. 1, which died last night, was a valuable animal, well trained and with a wonderful instinct. Last Saturday night, al though then very near his end, he arose as soon as the fire alarm was sounded and staggered to his stall, where he stood waiting to have the harness dropped upon him. x It is a fact that there is not now a thoroughly serviceable learn for anv one of the three fire steamers in this city, nor for the Hook & Lad der Co. The cause of this is as cribed mainly to the fact that the horses were worked sometimes dur ing the recent rains and thus be. came chilled when overheated with work. The city mules, also, it is said, have suffered from the same cause. The engines weigh about 5,500 to 6,000 pounds each and they need good, strong, healthy horses to pull them. Weather Crop Bulletin. The. reports of; correspondents of the Weekly Crop Bulletin; publish ed by the North Carolina Experi ment Station and State Weather Service, cooperatipg with the United States Signal Service," show that there has been about an average rainfall, temperature and sunshine. The general effect upon the crops has been somewhat favorable, es pecially cotton, tobacco and corn. Prospects decidedly better than last week's. With favorably sea sons" it is possible thaf an ayerage crop may yet be made.1 Farmers decidedly. hopeful. In the Eastern district, however, the returns are not quite so favorable In this dis trict' there has been a slight excess of rainfall and average tempera ture and very little sunshine. The general effect upon crops has been somewhat unfavorable, especially to corn and cotton. But the sum mary for this district is j made up from very meagre returns. With two exceptions these are j from the Northeastern portion of the " State. Brunswick is the only county South of Craven which was lieard from and the report from South port says: "Seasonable weather. Fine potatoes and corn and garden stuff." For North Carolina, fair weather, and stationary temperature. For Wilmington and vicinity, fair weather. A Great Farmers' Mass Meeting. In view of the tact that the rates for transportation are the lowest that can be obtained and therefore put it in the power of the , largest number of our farmers, especially those at a distance, to come togeth er for conference and discussion,1 and fcr the further fact that a great deal-of interest in this way of dis play in stock and farm products will instruct and benefit them; and the farther fact that excursion will be run from Northern cities to Ral-f eigh during that week, where an opportunity will be given to owners of land to meet tnose wno are aesir iouaof Inspecting them, it is deem ed advisable and of ad vantage to call a grand mass meeting of the farmers r i riL. x J.1 ! 1. .
