Of more than usual interest will be the triennial meeting next Octo ber in St. George's Church, New York city, of the General Convene tion of the protestant Episcopal Church in the United States. It will be an occasion doubly centen nial, making the hun Jredth an niversary both of the' union of the churches in several of the newly created States and of the ratifica tion of the Book of CommonPrayer. Questions to be considered, notably the revision of the prayer book, the basis of representation, the propos ed change in the title of the church, marriage and divorce, Christian unity and work among the colored people, appeal to a " large number of persons within and without the communion of the Protestant Epis copal Church. Their operations were dissimilar from those of their West ern bretheren, however. Instead of running off the; cattle they would butcher them, a beef at a time, and it was very difficult to detect them. The leader of the gang has' been caught, however and was arrested at Burgaw a few days ago. His name is Madison Murphy. He is colored, and he has for some years past borne a bad character. He im plicates others and it is thought that a regular gang of cattle thieves have been at work. - , . 1 i - - - ,. , - j Don't Read This for 850O.
