A strange dog supposed to be mad,
caused some excitement yesterday
at Mr. Hankins'j place in Brunswick
county, about five miles from the
city. An attempt was made to kill
the animal but the gun did'nt go off

A telegram from the Chief Signal
Officer at Washington, last night, to
the Sajgnal Station here says: Re"
ports indicate that a severe storm is
approaching Florida from the south
east, although dangerous winds
have not occurred at any f the
coast stations, and the conditions of
the storm are not sufficiently defined
to justify the ordering of signals.
Further notice will be given should
the danger increase. Up to our close
no further advices relative to the
threatened storm had been received

Yesterday Afternoon's Regatta.
The ladies race took place yester
day afternoon at Wrights ville, as

per announcement, xnere was a
good attendance and 'a great deal
of interest, was manifested. The
grand stand afc the water's edge
was well filled. There was a light
breeze and a cloudy skyjand a pleas
ant rae. Prof. Miller's band dis
coursed some delightful music dur
ing the race. The winning yachts

Fennell.
The last named, although in the
third class, came in ahead of every-,
thing, and was greeted with rousing
oheers from the spectators of the
race.
The judges were Mrs. W.H. North
rop, Miss Jenuie Northrop and Miss
Louise Knight.
The prizes for the winning boats
will be presented some evening dur
ing the coming week at the Club
House on the beach, on which occa
sion. it is proposed to have a dance

A Painful Injury.
Mr.SylvanusHolden, a well known
carpenter,, living on Ninth street,
between Princess and Chestnut, had
the misfortune to have the first
joint of his thumib on his left hand
mashed on Thursday while at work
at the Chmpion . Compresc. He
was hanging one of the heavy doors
when it slipped, forcing his. hand
against the steel facing with the
above result.

We have heard some very, nice
compliments paid the present man-
agetnent of the Island Beach Hotel.
A gentleman who interviewed a
number of guests there now, at the
pavilion on Thursday night, says
that they oiie and all spoke in very
high terms of the conduct of the
house. They say that there has
been a great improvement in the
fare and the attendance since : Mr.
Piatt left and that anyone who can
find find fault with the management
must be hard to please. There are
a large number of guests there now
and the number is being constantly
augmented.
