Clinton Caucasian-. Mr. Clifton
Ward has received his commission
as Postmaster at this place and will
take charge next Monday. The
revival at the Baptist Church, under
the management of Rev. O.l'.Meeks,
the nastor. continues this week. So
far there has been fifteen or sixteen
confessions and seven additions to
the church.
Newbern Journal: Mr. MouJton,
the taxidermist, brougnt to our
office vesterdav a curiosity, in the
shane of'a tusk, or something re
sembling the tusk of an elephant.
On a card attached were these
words: "This tusk was taken by
Richard Midyette while fishing a
drag net at New Inlet, Pamlico
Sound, N. C." Our zoologist gives
it up. It looks like ivory. 2 feet 5
inches in length, 2 inches in diam
eter at the larger end, and with a
slight curve tapers gracefully to a
point. It weighs nearly Ah pounds.
Charlotte Chronicle: The Ren
wood Cotton Mill, a new brick build
ingabouta mile from Lowell, owned
by Capt. Harrison Watts and D. R.
Smith, burned 4 down yesterday
morning. The mill had been shut
down for a week. The picker house
. alone was saved by the gangway be
ing cut away. Much valuable ma
chinerv is lost, a large portion of
which has but recently been moved
into the mill. The mill had 0,000
spindles. The total loss is $G5,000.
The mill was insured for $51,000.
Capt. Watts says that he has no idea
whatever, how the fire originated.
Lenoir Topic: On the 22nd of
August the residence and out build
" ings of Mr. Alva Barlow and of his
mother, Mrs. Cynthia BanoV?, on
King's Creek, were destroyed by
fire. Loss about $1,000. They have
rebuilt on the same site. Messrs.
JM. Bernhardt, of Lenoir, and A.
G. Bfenizer, of Charlotte, have pur
chased, for $4,000, the Green Hill
Bropertv at Blowing Rock from Mr.
. W. Estes. This farm of 200 acres

Charlotte News: The Charlotte
factories are still booming along and
there, is increasing prosperity at
each of the four mills. The direc
tors of the Victor Mills yesterday
instructed its president to buy 1,500
additional spindles and the extra
machinery will be ordered at once.
This will give the Victor a total of
12,000 spindles. Two months
ago George Anderson and another
colored man got into a fight at
Beaver Dam, Union county, and in
the fight Anderson was bitten on his
thumb. No attention was paid to
the wound at the time, but a week
or two afterwards inflamiimtion set
in and Anderson soon became help
less. He was 'sent to the county
poor house at Monroe, and on Mon
day Jast it became necessary to
amputate his arm as a last resort.
Even now it is feared that the

Roxboro special to Charlotte
Chronicle: A shocking surprise
awaited one of the families of J.
S. W. Long, living near Roxboro,
on going, yesterday morning, the
6th instant, to the baru onthe prem
ises. Miss Sallie Moore, a young
teacher boarding at Mr. Long's,
was found cold in death, suspended
by a plow line tied around her neck,
to a joint of the barn, about twenty
five feet above the ground. It ap
peared that there had been only a
momentary struggle after the fatal
leap. Her dress was found pinrxM
in an unusal way around her neck.
On opening the dress thus arranged,
two gashes were found on her neck,
from which it was evident tliat ghe
attempted suicide with a razor. It is
thought that she , made this at
tempt in a room of the dwelling
early ip the morning, and that, her
couragp laiung, sne made ner way
to the burn where she ended her
life In the manner stated. She left
a note in which were written: "He
iloes not care to save mv life." and
words of farewell to her father and
mother.
Rockingham-itocie: . Col. Steele,

in bagging a good many sage hens,
ducks, and other small game.
