Collins, of Burgaw, writes us of the pleasure he had a few days since'in meeting with 'Mr. Elijah Walker, from the upper part of Moore's Creek, in PenderC ounty. Mr. Walker is a remarkable man in more ways than one. He enlisted in the i ate war in Capt. C. D. Ellis' company (B. 1st N. C. Battalion) in 1862 and served until the close. He was wounded in both hands, our correspondent does not say in which fight, , but it was probably at Bentonsville, where this company was in the hardest of the fight. Mr. Walker is 98 years of age but is still hale, hearty and vigorous. He can easily walk 25 miles a day. He was never seriously sick and Jwas ne,ver prescribed for by a physician. He can and sometimes does, follow a plow all day long. He is a wonder fully fine specimen of a very old man. j The Theatrical Season. A city correspondent writes us as follows in regard to the new theat rical season: "As the season is now open for operas etc., I hope the management of the Opera House will give us some rare treats, such as the follow ing: RiceTJ'Jvatigcline, Dixie's Ado Two old Cronies combination, MacCollins' Opera Company and Gratfs Opera Coinpntiy. And be sides these may be mentioned, An nie Pixby, Patti Rosa, Emma Ab bott and other A No..l actresses. And I mast iofc forget Prol Wrd, Robert Downing, Thos. W. Keene the Prescott, McLean combination, and Louis James, I am glad to see that Miss Ellsler is to be with us Thursday evening. She is an able, accomplished and brilliant actress and she should be greeted with a large house. I hope this will be tlie case as she fs one of the best and fairest actresses travelling in the South." . Effle " Kllsler. Miss Effie Ellsler, the brilliant young American actress, will appear at the Opera House in this city on Thursday night in"The Governess," a charming domestic drama. Her appearance here will be one of the notable theatical eyents of the season. A gentleman in this city,an o,ld theatre-goer and an accomplish ed dramatic critic, who is well ac quainted with Miss Ellsler's wonder ful dramatic career, writes us as follows in regard to her and her father: , - Thursday night being the first ap pearance of the EUslers in Wilming ton, there may exist some doubt in the minds of. our. theatre patrons concerning their position in the profession. John Ellsler, as actor, author tutor and manager, h,as done as much for the American stage as any living man. A large number of the famed actors and actresses of to day owe what they are to the kindly consideration, en couragement and training received at his hands. Th old Aoademy of Music at Cleveland, Ohio, was thS refuge and home of many struggling young men and women who are to day "bright stars." Clara Morris owes her fame to Effie Eilsler's father, and the same fathexly care nas maae uis qaugnter wnai sne ia to-daV: a snlend id -actress, as was her mother before hor. I have re peatedly geen the entiie Ellsler family, father, mother and five children, sncludine the . 'baby," on the stasre at one time as the support of Jefferson, Adams, Owens, and. Couldock. K We urge upon all our readers the importance of studying the urst announcement of the A. & M. A. College, also a prompt response to the call of the 'Superintendent of Public Instruction for competitive examination in all the counties of the Sate. The first session of the college opens about a week before the time of the next State Fair. We hope that while at the, fair, Oct. 15th to 19th, our young men will visit the college. j City Court, The Mavor had but three, cases thjnrr from light comedy to heavy before him jto-day and -I these were tragedy, with all the celebrities of t fL.M,',,.- the land. We understand that Mr. August Roder, of Baltimore, who has been ' i i connected with the Island Beach Hotel at the Hammocks during the past Summer, as caterer for the house, and who by his .geniai de portment has made many friends among our people, has leased the Purcell House building for five years fromJMessrs.' W. E. Springer & Co. and will open it as a first class hotel on or about November 15th. In the meantime the house is to be furnished from top to bottom, and in a handsome style. The name of the house, will not be changed but it will be known, as of old, as the Purcell House. The large stores on the first floor, recent y occupied by Mr. I. Shrier, will be utilized for purposes of business. The office, reading room, bar, bil liard room, &c, will all be located there. With the recent improve ments and additions made by the. owners of tne uuiming, mes-rs. w. E. Springer & Co., the Purcell House will rank as one of the largest hotels in the State. The lessee, Mr. Roder, is a thor ough hotelist as well as a courteous and accommodating gentleman. He has been in the business ever since he was 13 years old and is conver sant with every detail. Wo tinders stand that he has abundant means behind him and that he is deter mined to make the house one of the best in the State. A 1 .V.V t 4 nil enr uivovii, Matthew Robinson, drunk and. ' 17 PBINCESS STKEET, Weather Crop Bulle.'n The reports of correspondents of the Weekly Crop Bulletin, publish ed by the North Carolina Experi ment Station and State Weather Service, show that during the week ending Friday, September 27th, the ra'nfa" has been some what above the average, except in the central and southeastern por tion of the State, where it was about the average. The temperature and sunshine hava been about the aver age for this season of the year. The weather has been generally favor ably to crops and farm work of all kinds. The excess of rainfall oc curred chielly in the western por tion of the State. General rains occurred during the night of the ssti aim morning oi tne 24m. rue fall was about 1.G5 inches above the average;, but no serious damage re sulted. Light hoar frost formed Sunday morning, injuring tender vines and plants. Through the re mainder of the week, though the nights were cool, the temperature was about an average. Plenty ! of sunshine has been favorable to the maturing of cottonwhich is, how ever, opening but slowly. With a late fall it is expected that fully an average crop will be obtained in most districts.
