Bought New Furniture. i:
Mr. Aug. Roder, proprietor of the
new Purcell House, and Mr. W. E-
LSpringer visited Goldsboro yester
day and purchased a large amount
of furniture from' the factory in that
place. Had there been a furniture'
factory here the goods would have
been bought in Wilmington. The
gentlemen sho wed their patriotism
and good sense by not going North
for the goods when they could be
bought at home.

Joint memorial services will be
held in the First Baptist Church to
morrow evening by the members of
Cape Fear Lodge No. 2 and Orion

American Safes in Paris.
The Farrel & Herring Patent Safes have
been awarded the grand. Gold Medal at the
present Exposition in Paris.
The Pioneer and Her Cargo.
. The steamship Pioneer is a total
wreck. Information to this effect
was received here last night by Mr.
H. G. Smallbones, Superintendent
of the New York & Wilmington
Steamship Co. at this port. The
cargo is also a total loss. The vessel
was insured for $50,000. The value
of the cargo, which was owned
principally by parties in this cjty, is
unknown, as also the amount of in
surance on it.

We learn that it is in contempla-
tion by the Carolina Central Rail
road authorities to put on at an
early day a daily local freight train
leaving Wilmington and Charlotte
each morning and reaching their
respective destinations, Charlotte
and Wilmington, the same day.
This will be a great convenience to
the merchants here and patrons all
along the line between the two
cities.

The Purcell House will be opened;

Very Low "Water.:-
The water in the Cape Fear is dis
tressingly low. There is only about
two and a half feetat Fayetteville

The Murchison is here to-day. She
left Fayetteville yesterday morning
and arrived here at 4 o'clock this
morning. She ought to have made
the round trip and been back at
