It is likely now that the Cape Fear and Yadkin .Valley Railroad authorities will not start out their trains from this city until about the 10th or 15th, of Nomvember. The gap between Black River and-Fay-etteville is being rapidly laid with iron and it is still hoped to get this completed by the first of next Jan uary. At 4 o'clock this afternoon she had not arrived in below and was not insight off the bar. We think, though, that she will surely bo' here to-morrow. The Firo Last Night. The alarm of fire was sounded last night about half-past 8 o'clock. It came from box 35, Eighth and Market streets, and was caused by ignition of the roof of a two story frame dwelling on Eighth, between Orange and Ann streets, owned by Jesse McDonald and occupied by George Franklin, colored. The family we're all out at church at the time. The flames were first seen on the roof, near the Southeast corner of the building, and probably caught from a spark or from a defective chimney. Nearly all of the furniture wassaved. The house was not entirely destroyed, the tire men having saved the 'lower half. House and furniture were both in sured. Duplin lioads Items. (Reported for the Review.) Mr. James Wells, a very reliable gentleman who resides near this vil lage, told me that two of his sons went 'possum hunting on Tuesday night of last week and their dogs treed eleven 'possums up one large gum tree. They bagged them all. A good night for 'possums. On Thursday of last week the Ma sons of this vicinity held a meeting at their lodge at Teachey's for the purpose of transacting some impor tant business. There was a large crowd in attendance. At 1 o'clock, in the grove near the lodge room, there was a table filled with the choicest viands. All present were invited to come up and take dinner with them. v On Thursday night of last weekj in company with some of my young friends pf the village, I went to an old-fashioned corn-shucking on the farm of Capt. W. N. Ellsworth, near this place. Angola Dew was plenti ful and there was a good time gen erally. It reminded me of the days "befo' de wah.'" The Captain had 112 barrels shucked out. Mrs. Duncan McNair, of Lumber ton, with her two little nephews, is visiting our village, the guests of Mrs. W. J. Boney. On Friday evening of the past week the citizens of the village and surrounding country had the pleas ure of bearing one of the finest ad- dresses that the people of this coin- munity have ever, been treated to. i i Ai.i- e .t i by lllill UlU-lilMllUUt'll gentleman and scholar, - Dr. S. Cotton Bales and Cotton Presses. The warehouses at the cotton compresses are full of the fleecy staple now. The Champion press was in full blast to-day but those at the Wilmington Compress were not running to-day. ' It is a noticeable fact that, notwithstanding the war on jute bagging, a large proportion of the bales ;is still covered with that material, (runny bagging seems next in favor. The Merchants' Carnival. The preparations for the giving of the Merchants' Carnival by the ladies of the Lutheran Church are going on with all of the vigor that promises success, and even those who take part are becoming more and more interested in itand pleased with it. It will certainly be quite an enjoyable affair, and as it is thei first ever given in our city, and pos sibly the first in North Carolina, it will no doubt be greeted with a large audience on next Thursday night in the Opera House. Tickets ire only 25 cents, reserved seats 35 cents. The Germania band will appear in full uniform The Postal Telegraph. The Postal ! Telegraph line will come to Wilmington. This has been definitely' determined upon. Mr. W. J. Kirkham has just returned from a selection of the route. The poles are to be erected and the wires strung just as soon as the former can be got out. By the route selected the wires will cross the Cape Fear at Market Dock, cross Eagle's Island and Brunswick river and will then take up the West side of the North East Cape Fear to Fayetteville, where they will con nect with the system already estab lished. . It is thought that the work" will be completed by the first of February. j Married in New York. i Mr. It. M. Dix, of this city, who has recently removed to New York, was married in that city on last Wednesday night to Miss Estelle, only daughter of Mr. Wm. R. Utley, who was for many years a resident of Wilmington. Mrs. Gabriel Holmes was present at the mar riage and returned here on Satur day night. It was a home wedding, a quiet, old North Carol ind" affair. The presents were numerous, hand some and costly. Mr. Utley's present to his daughter was a check for an amount so large that it is said the interest, on that alone would suffice to support her haiid somely. Mr. Dix has gone into business with Mr. Utley, who is a prosperous merchant in New York. f' The Athenean Literary Society. A number of young men interest ed in the organization of a literary society, met on-. Saturday night at the rooms of the Young Men's Christian Association. The troupe is Composed of first-class material and includes the Japanese juggler, "Prince Tanka.1' It is a good show and one well worth seeing. The Minstrels played in Raleigh on Saturday night and the JVcius and Observer warmly com mends them. In its yesterday's issue it says; Gorton's minstrels .appeared in Metropolitan! Hall last night and played to a good house. It is safe to say that this is the best minstrel troupe that has been to the city in the past 3rear. The gags were all crisp, new and sparkling and kept the audience int an uproar. 'The clog dancing was especially fine and was universAlly pronounced the best ever seen here. The troupe carries with it a magnificent band which in itself is equal to an ordinary show. There are Giants in These Days Too. j Wilmington, N. C, Oct. 25. Several citizens were knocked down and some of them badly bitten by an umbrella-mender's dog last Mon day while Policeman Grant was trying to arrest a negro giant, who is as crazy as he is powerful. Jack Outlaw, the maniac, came here from Darlington, S. C, last Friday and has been; loafing around the streets ever since. He is seven feet two, with legs like telegraph poles and arms like windmills. When the officer attempted to arrest him the giant twisted his club from his hands and as fast as citizens came to the officer's assistance Outlaw knocked theiu down. In the ex citement the dog bit several of the prostrate men. The brawny colored man looked into the muzzle of a re volver with utter unconcern, and finally started down the street, twirling the rjolicenian's club jaun tily. The crowd at his heels alarms ed him somewhat and he turned into the auditor's office at the rail road building, scattering the clerks like chaff before the wind. The maniac was finally captured. Of course this is from the New York World; who the author of the thing is has not transpired; The facts are these: Officer Grant ar rested for vagrancy a colored man, apparently under six feet in height. The prisoner went quietly for about thirty yards when he wheeled on flie officer andjhif him on the arm. A scuffle' ensued and the man got possession of the officer's club. Mr. Grant stepped back a few paces, and leveled his revolver at the fellow, commanding him to drop the club. mm.,. ,.4-,-v.wi ..:m f... r,..., J. Tli man then walked into the Auditor's office ami was al lowed to remain thereat the request of the officer until assistance could be gotten fromithe City Hall. The man's demeanor was quiet; he offer ed no violence to any one;not one of the eighteen men employed in the Auditor's office left the room.
