The New Purcell House will open
its doors to the public to-morrow,,

Everything is
I wherever 'needed;
'Perfectly new and
of the best.
There iVnt an old
carpet, an old
chair or bedstead or table in the
house.
The office, bar, billiard room and
luncJi room are all on the ground
floor, extending the entire depth of
the main building. The fittings are
all in exquisite taste. The bar is one
of the handsoaiest in the State. The
Large mirror in the back is 4 feet
high and 8 feet wide. The fixtures
are of carved oak. The billiard
room Is fitted with two tables, one a
pool table and the other a billiard
table, direct from the manufactory
at Baltimore.
A broad staircase leads from the
ground floor to the first floor above
At the head of this staircase there
will be three electric lights. The
jmrlors, bridil chambers and dining
room are all on this floor. The for
mer is neatly but tastily furnished.
The ceiling is frescoed in colors.
The bridal chambers are fitted out
with new" and exquisitely carved
sots of sweet gum furniture. The
"walls of the passage are covered
with handsome paper and the floor
with a thick carpet. The dining
room is in the rear in an entirely
new part of the building. It is
handsomely arranged and is fitted
out ready for the first meal, with its
snowy table cloths, China dishes
and sparkling silver and glass and
cushioned arm chairs. The lights in
this room will be furnished by beau
tiful combination burners, with ar
tistically designed glass globes,
where either gas or electricity may
be used. In this room 75 persons
may be fed at one time. The chain
bers on this floor and on the floors
above are all covered with comfort
able carpets in cosy designs" aDd the
furniture in all of them is new and
handsome. They will all be lighted
with gas. There are 60 rooms in
the house.
The Purcell is complete in all of
its appointments and will readily
rank among the leading, hotels in
the South.
A new bus has been built for the
house and will make its first trip To
the depot to-night, under charge
of David Barnes, the colored potter.
Dave is from Wilson and is one of
the best known porters in the State.
The staff, as at present constitut-'
;ed, is as follows: August Roder,
Proprietor: Samuel Westbrook and
Jas. U. Hiuton, clerks; Harry R.
Smith and Allie Luitweiler, book
keeper. I'atae Your Own Meat.
Mr. L. Toilers, of Point Caswell,,
who was here to-day, does not be
lieve in keeping his smoke-house in
Cincinnati or Chicago. He makes
his own bacon and with choice
breeds of hoers. This has been' a
good year for them and he has made
the most of it. Some farmer told a
Monroe paper the other day that
he could raise his own meat at a
cost of not more than 3d cents a
pound. Mr. Vollers says it can be
done down in this country for four
cents and that no one need ever pay
more than five cents. There is a
good profit here. The hams sell for
from' 121 to 16 cents per pound, the
shoulders for about 10 cents and the
sides for about 12. Dry salted
sides, or "Nassau bacon" as we used
i
to call it during the war, costs the
countryman nearly twice asmuch
as tne nauve meac can ue ,aiseu lor
wollid be well to ponder these
facts.
