Joe Howard, who makes many startling statements in the columns of the Ne w York Press, says that a man does not approximate wealth in these days until ho has $5,000,000, and he believes that there are over two hundred such men in New York. For the first time in the history of that institution, the quarterly financial report of the directors o the penitentiary shows the earnings to be in excess of the expenses. The expensesforSeptcmber were $ 10,501. 67; for October, $20,81G.C3: for November, $20.180.95 total for the quarter, $57,538.24. The earnings for September were, $24,171.83; for October, $21,572.09; for November, $18,305.00 total for the quarter, $04,109,28. Excess of earnings $0, 571.01. . The Raleigh News and Observer says: "It seems that Senator Blair has modified his school bill so as to remove sojno of the objections tha It was formerly open to. We had formerly advocated that the Demo cratic House should take the bill and eliminate all objectionable fea tures, and then pass it. When the Democratic House gave place to a Republicin one, we did not expect that such amendments as were dc- sired would be made; ? but if they can be madenov, we would favor the passage of the measure.' - - North Carolina seems to be loom ing np grandly as a first class min eral State. Recently there have been big gold finds in Montgomery and only to-day we found a state item telling about some one having pick ed up a genuine diamond in Mcor?, and now from the Lenoir Topic, we learn that the Watauga silver mine has been explored sufficiently to show that it is a very valuable mine. In Stokes county it is declared that ihere is a lead of twenty miles of magnetic iron ore embracing prob ably two hundred properties of vast value. The lead is three miles wide and H number of veins may be seen from ten to fifteen feet thick, carry ing from 40 to 70 per cent, of pure metal. -Theofe is said to be free from phosphorus and sulphur. What we need here in Wilmington is a wood inspector It is'nt often that a man who buys a load from a flat gets a quarter of a cord. The markets will remain open all day to-morrow and until 9 o'clock to-morrow night, but will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday. The Georgia turpentine hands were in th city in largo force to day and the money they had to spend helped to keep the Christmas pot aboiling. On Christinas' Day the Seaooast U. R. will run an extra train, leav ing hero at 10 o'clock in the morn ing and returning in time for the Christmas dinner. An Onslow man had a large quan tity of dressed geese and turkeys in market this morning. Some of them were good butothers were a little off. The weather was so warm that thev turned sour. The Mayor had a long list of de linquents before him this morning but in view of the near approach of the holidays he tempered justice with incrcy. In all, the finesjim- posed amoinnted to but $30. Our desire is to put the Review to press very early to-morrow after noon ?o as to give our people a chance to do a little Christmas shop ping. Puruell, formerly of this city, but for many years past a resi dent of Raleigh. Me has been in the city several days but leaves to-night on his return to Raleigh. The various schools in the city, public and private, will suspend to morrow until the 2d day of January. The only exception to this, we be lieve, is the Tileston Normal School, where the suspension is for tlus week, commencing to day. Don't forget the candy party to be given this evening and to morrow evening in the old Hemenway. school house, next South of St. Andrew's Church, on Fourth street. There are some places in the Stat -, notably Charlotte, where the boys are not allowed to burn any gun powder within tin city limits at Xmas. Here it is different. It is true that firearms must not be-dis charged but fireworks of all kinds may be lot off under certain restric tions. This Christmas, as set by Mayor Fowler, in his proclamation published in this issue, they can be let off anywhere except west of Front street, and on Market, be tween Front and Second.
