There was a beautiful Christmas
tree last night, in the building cor
ner Fifth and Ann streets, for the
benefit of the little ones of St.
Thomas' Church and .a pleasant en
tertainment in connection with the
distribution of the gifts.
The Christmas germau given last
night, in Concordia Hall, by the
L'Arioso Plsasure Club, was largely
attended and was a most brilliant
and enjoyable occasion. Mr. E. P.
Boatwright led and there were
about 60 couples on the floor. The
spectators were also out in large
numbers.
The ballqmudre to be piven at the

will be danced out and the new year
will be danced in. After the lire
works there will be refreshments.
Turner's almanac tells us that
fields were first fenced on the 38th
day of December, A. D. 872. How
this interesting fact became known
and1 how it has since been preserved
"in the archives of gravity," we are
not informed. Possibly it may have
some connection with the fences

J. W. Mitchell, the well known

had in hand to day for sale the first
white shad of the season. There
"Were but two of them but they were
both large buck shad, one a very
large fish. They were caught some

probably the first time that a spring

anywhere in this latitude.
The t;ieeCltib Concert.
The box sheet for the concert to
be given on Monday night at the
Opera House by the Princeton Col
lege and Glee Glub is already pretty
well cut up, thus giving a plain in
dication of the fact that there will
be a iarg? audience present on that
occasion. There are a number of
gootl eats, .however, that have not
yet been taken and those whose
purpose it is to attend, and who
have not yet provided themselves
with seats, should see to it at once.
Kootleg' Baby.
If the dramatization of Booties'
Baby is anything like as good as the
novellette -fro.it which it is taken
then those who attend at the Opera
House to night may rest satisfied of
a highly pleasing entertainment.
The story is one of the most popu
lar of the day and the fact that the
play has hal an immense success
wherever it has been produced is a
sufficient guarantee of its merits.
The company which will produce it
to night is said to be a. very good
one.
Ovide M ugiii.
Ovide Mtisiti, the world-famous
violinist, is now on a grand musical
tour of the South and will give an
entertainment at the Opera House,

Annie Louise Fanner, soprano; Miss
Pauline MontegrifTo, contralto; Sig
nor Maina, basso; and Mr. E. Scharf,
pianist, in the grand concert. It
will be a notable musical event and
one that will surely be taken ad van"
tage of. Reserved seats will be on
sale at V'ates' on Mondav.
