If anybody sees - anything of a cold wave, or a cool wave, enquiring the way to Wilmington, they will please start it in the right direction for this locality. The cold wave did not get here on time this morning but we think it may surely be looked for to-night. When this bridge is ready the rails can be laid from both ends simulta neously and the result can easily be three miles per day. It is stated, confidently, that the entire, work will be done and a train run through from Wilmington to Fayetteville on the first day of Febrfiary, We were one of aWnall party avIio yesterday accompanied Capt. J. W. Fry, the General Superintendent, in his private car on a trip over the road as far as Parkersburg, 50 miles from yilmington and 33 from Fay etteville, which is considered the presenj; terminus of the road. There were in the party also Capt W. E. Kyle, the General Freight and Pas senger Agent, Mr. R. W. Bidgood, the Auditor, Mr. J. C. -Murchison, Master of Trains, 'Mr. .Thoniiis C. James, Freight and Passenger Agent at Wilmington, Mr. Jos. H. McRee, Resident Engineer, Mr. William Woodroffe, contractor on improve ments, and Capt. flodson, conduc tor: The road leaves Wilmington at the Point Peter terminus and passes up through the Mt, Iigery7and hills, as (reary a section of country, by the way, as the rim generally shines upon. There is about twelve miles of this and then the character of the country rapidly changes, and some fine farming lands and heavily timbered districts are soon encount ered. Moore's Creek is 18 miles from Wilmington and the road crosses ;this historic stream about 300 yards East of the monument which stands oh the revolutionary battle field. From thence to the crossing at Black River the road runs in a Northwesterly direction and with but very-few curves. It leaves Long Creek to the right, about four miles, and Point Caswell to the lefr about vtwo, miles. It iloes n.ot pass near the rich farming section which borders the river but a few miles in the interior. It is a virgin countiy and but few settle ments are visible but much of it is a rich farming country and will rapid ly assume all the phases of living life. Already a number of have lo cated on the line and there are three sawmills now in operation, even '.be fore the road has been opened to traffic. Very soon there will be a dozen or more of these mills, in stead of three. Houses will be built rapidly when (he lumber is conven ient, . The road is well laid and much of it has already been ballasted. It is ieniarkably smooth and solid . for a new road-bed. The bridge over Black River, with the long trestle approaching it, is a magnificent piece of work. The bridge itself is of iron and stands 45 feet nbove the water, thus obviating the possible ntjeesitv for a draw. The trestle is i. three fourths of a mile in length and is in some places 40 feet high. It approaches the bridge in a perfect and beautiful curve. It is ivery strongly built and ought to jvith" stand the heaviest freshets. The party did not go beyond Parkersburg, although the track is laid 12 miles beyond. Parkersburg is a new creation. A few months ago'it was an old field and to-day it exhibits evidences of a healthy growth. It is located in Sampson county, midway between the Little Coharie On one side and South River on the other, and but two miles froin either. It Is expeeted now that that the road -will be open for traffic, as far as Parkersburg, on the 20th inst., Our statement yesterday as to the 13th was correct but late in the day Capt. Fry decided to make- it the 20th. . , -V v - . The property owned by the com pany here is very valuable. TThey I m p or tan tSa ! .
