Army "when only 17 years of age and

The fact that fifty-five thousand
persons were convicted of criminal
offenses in the State of New York
last year will hot, says the Alexan
dria Gazette, strike a single North
ern South-hating Republican as at
all indicative of a predisposition to
crime among the people of that
l3tate, nor will it induce a single
Northern Republican Congressman
to introduce a resolution in Con
gress for the appointment of a ..Con
gressional committee to inquire into
the cause of the deplorable condi
tion referred to, and to report a
remedy therefor. '

Mr. Hewett's daucing school
opened auspiciously last,, night at
Germania Hall, where a gentlemen's
class was formed. A ladies' class

afternoon.
This morning was the coldest of
the season. Ice formed plentifully
in all exposed, places, but as the at
mosphere was very dry it is proba
ble that the fruit and the young
plants escaped injury.
At 7 o'clock this morning the ther
mometer registered 27.4 at this place.
This is 4.C degrees below the freez
ing point. It was snowing right
briskly at Weldon 'at 2 o'clock this
afternoon and we may possibly have
a little of it here to-night.
Mr. John F. Garrell has a few
beautiful stall-fed Sampson county
beef cattle, which will be on sale at
his stalls in Front street market to
morrow and Saturday. There is no
better meat in the world than this
famous stall-fed Sampson beef.
At 12 o'clock to-mofrow, at the
Court House door, Mr. H, A. Lon
don, Commissioner, will sell the one
half interest of the late Mrs. Sally J.
Moore in the large brick building on
Nortn Front street; adjoiningToom
er's alley and just south of the Pur
cell House.
The city authorities re laying
some good hard material in the
driveway ; on,-Dock-street, east of
Sixth; It is the tar waste from the
C. F. & Y. V. premises at the.foot of
Mulberry street. It makes a, good,
hard healthy roadway and bids fail
to last forever and a day.
