. Some interesting trials of skill
have recently taken place among the
workmen employed in the rolling
mills of Birmingham and Ansonia,
Conn. One operative rolled an: old
fashioned copper cent into a strip 18
inches long and 3.2000 inch thick.
In a spirit of emulation other work
men essayed cent rolling, and the
record was broken by an Ansonia
roller, who, commencing with a
modern alloy cent, finished with a
strip of metal 38 inches long and
1,500 inch in thickness. Afterward
with an 1888 cent the same man ob
tained a 6 ribbon of bronze 50 inches
long, 3 4 inch wide, and 1-2000 inch
thick.

In 18G4 China supplied ninety
seven per-cent. of the tea consumed
in the world, and India three per
cent. In 1888 she supplied forty
three per cent, and India fifty nine
percent. This decline is relative,
and not real, owing to increased
consumption. But the India growers
are prospering immensely and going
ahead rapidly, the result of superior
intelligence, the introduction of im
proved machinery, and better meth-
ods, while China has kept up her old
system. It is said that prominent
Iudian planters have, expressed the
belief that within a few years Indian
tea can be sold in the European
and American markets at ten and
fifteen cents er pound, equal in
quality and flavor to Chinese tea
now selling at from five to eight
times the sum.
The deatliyecently took place at
Somerville, Mass., of "Aunt"' Mary
Tyler, the heroine of the nursery
ballad, "Mary had a Little Lamb."
Mrs. Tyler was 85 years old. When
a child she attended a school at Ster
ling, Mass., where, it is said, the
episode of the Iamb occurred, and
where the school house into which
it followed Mary is still pointed out
to visitors. Mrs. Tyler used to re
cite that she was induced to take
the lamb to school by her brother
Nate, and when she arrived at the
school house put the little animal
upder her desk, where it lay quietly
until Mary was called out to recite.
Then the lamb trotted out after the
little maid, to the great amazement
of the teacher, while, says Mrs. Ty
ler, the children giggled outright.
The lamb was killed by a vicious
cow, and its fleece -was spun and
knit into stockings.
The human family living on earth
to-day consists of about 1,450,000,000
souls, not less, but probably more.
They are distributed all over the
earth's surface, there being no con
siderable spot where man has not
found a foothold. In Asia, the sup
posed cradle of -the human race,
there are now about 800,000,000 of
people densely crowded, on an ave
rage 120 to every square mile. In
Europe there are 320,000.000, averag
ing 100 to each square mile, aud not
so -crowded, but everywhere dense
anil in many places over-populated.
In Africu therf. are approximately
210,000,000, antl jn tlte Americas,
Nsth, Central and South, 110.000,
000, and of course,, relatively, thinly
scattered. In the Islands, large and
small, there are probably 10,000,000.
The extremes of the whites and
blacks are as five to three; the re
maining TOO. 000, 000 intermediate
brown and tawny color. Of the en
tire race r00,000,000 are well clothed
that is they wear garments of
some kind to cover nakedness; 250,
000,000 habitually go naked, and
700,000.000 only .cover the middle
parts of the body; 500,000,000 live in
houses, 700,000,000 in huts and caves,
and 2"0,000,000 virtually have no
place to lay their heads.

She Couldn't Drink It.
A Washington lady had occasion
the other lay to administer a seid
litz powder to her newly imported"
Irish servant. She put the contents
of the blue paper into one glass,
with water, in the usual fashion,
and the contents of the white paper
into another. When she put them
together and the mixture effervesced
violently, she handed the tumbler
to the patient, saying: "Prink it
quick."'
But the girl, instead of swallowing
it, sat down precipitately onthe
floor and replied:
"Why, ma'am, you surely wouldn't
expect nie to drink it bilin' hot!"
Advice to Mothers.
Mrs. Winslow's Soothing Syrup
should always be used when children
are cutting teeth. It relieves the lit
tle sufferer at once; it produces nat
ural, quiet sleep by relieving the
cuild from pain, and the little cher
ub awakes as "bright as button." It
is very pleasant to taste. It soothes
the child, softens the gums, allays
all pain, relieves wind, regulates the
