A game was made up for him and he played with. his mouth! He would bend over the table, take the ball between his lips and play and pocket about every time. Strange as it may seem, he made in this way also some fine pocket cushions. Of course, he attracts a great deal of attention whenever he gets any where, in the. neighborhood of a pool table. y The Moore' Creek Monument. The batte of Moore's Creek was fought on the 27thday of February, 1770, more than .four months pre rious to the signing of the Declara tion of Independence. But it was fought on Southern soil and has therefore received but scant notice from Northern historians. It was a. very important battle and a bloody one, for the British. But one man was killed on our side, a man by the name of Grady, from Duplin county, but. the enemy lost very heavily, in killed, wounded and captured. Gen. McDonald hoped to effect a junction here with Lord Clinton. His defeat turned the tide of tlip contest elsewhere. The battle field is about 18 miles from Wilmington and distant only about 300 yards from the bridge on the C. F. Ss Y. V. R. R , crossing Moore's Creek. There is a inonu ment there now. raised by patriots hands in the years just previous to the late war, but the grounds are neglected and sadly in need of atten tion. Congress was not'asked for a dollar of money to erect the monu ment but it is thought by-aiiany to be only right and proper that some public recognition;.of .it should be made by the appropriation of a sum of lnoney sufficient to enclose and ornament the grounds. With this object in view Hon. C. W. McCIain my, Representative from our neigh coring mstrier, tne rnirti, has in troduced the following bill into the House: . Whkrkas.A battle was fought and a most signal and decisive victory achieved by the rebel patriot North Carolina forces over the loyal- tories and British on the 27th day of Feb ruary, 177Ct which was most im portant in its results, not only, ta the colony of North Carolina, but to the pa'triot cause of the whole country, and ? WJjkrka?, It is desirable to com memorate that important event and perpetuate the memory of the gal lant men who served their country on that day, Thereore be it KcsolvaK By the. Senate and House of. Rejwesentalives of the United States of America in Con gress assembled, that the sura of three thousand dollars is hereby ap propriated out of any money in the Tlitf Violin Concert. "There was a goodly attendance at Luther Memorial Building last night to listen to the music of the first vio lin concert ever' given . by young lady amateurs i in t hi city, and all present were delightfully entertain ed. The violinists were Miss Alice Thorburu and... .31 it 3faie Souther laud. We are sure tliat we voice the. sentiment of every person pres ent when we say that the playing of both these young ladies wns a reve lation auu surprise. 1 Here was no effort to make a display further m .a ; than to give, the- music as it. was written and with the proper ex press- ion, and in this they were eminently successful. They gave us sweet musical tones instead of rngh and grating sounds music instead of noise, and their efforts reflected much credit both upon pupil and teacher. Rev. F. W. E. Peschau.who is by . far the best violinist in the city. There were three violin soos and four violin duetts given by the voting ladies and all were played ac curately, gracefully, skillfully and with taste and feeling, as was evi denced by the vociferous encores which followed every piece. The opening piece was a .piano duett by Mr. A. Adrian, Jr., and Miss E. C. Adrian, who may bo safe ly reckoned as among the best ama teur pianists in the city. "A. Bunch j of Violets,1" vocal solo, was sung by Miss Linda Peschau, of whom we 'have heretofore had occasion to speak as a rising young vocalist of much promise. Her etforts last night both in solo and in the duett with Miss Norma Foster, fully maintain ed her reputation as at mo song stress with a purely musical, flexible voice of large compass and power. Miss Annie Siolter, another of the vocalists, sung charmingly. She has a rich, sweet voice, t flexible and powerful, while the alto of her sis ter, Miss Kate Stoker, was true, sweet and pure, harmonizing and blending Avell with the other voices. The vocal quartette by the Misses Stolter and Messrs. Schulken and Render was well given and. was a musical treat. Messrs.
