The height of ocean waves has re

the surface of the water. It has
thus been proved that the waves at

Sketch of St. Jaio'.
The sketch of St. James' Parish,
written a few years ago by Col.
James G. Burr, and published for
the benefit of the parish, is now on

A I.arg Sale.
A large body of land in Columbus
county, some 10,000 acres in extent,
has been purchased from the State
by Messrs. Frost and Robinson,
through their attorney, Hon. Chas.
M. Stedinan. The price paid was
85 cents an acre. The tract is cov
ered with valuable timber and the
purchasers will at once erect mills
to saw it out.
Snow and Sleet.
It begau to snow last
night
not
long after dark and for a while the
flakes fell fast and furious. They
were about tha largest ever seen
here, making a spot on a fellow's
coat that a quarter would hardly
cover. It was a genuine surprise to
everybody as no one seemed to think
of such a thing as snow. It came
unheralded and departed ditto. A
fine rain fell later on but after mid
night there was both snow and sleet.
This morning the house tops were
all white but at noon all traces of
the snow had disappeared. Strange
to say the ground did not freeze and
there is therefore hope that such
vegetation as escaped the cold in
the early part of the week will
emerge uninjured.

McCarthy's Mishaps.
The above named farce as given
by the Ferguson & Mack comedians
will be the entertainjng bill offered
at the Opera House on Monday
evening next. This is the first en
gagement of these celebrated com
edians in this city and while they
come as comparative strangers,
they present the strongest of favor
able criticisms from the various
cities of this country. The farce is
described as a veritable cyclone of
fun and laughing and simply revels
in ready wit. It is an intermingled
quantity of fun, music and bright
specialties and that interpreted by
a select company of players whose ;
individual merits make them stand;
out ooiaiy out whose talents as a
group maHe them stand the one
