There, are 30 cities in thft State ami of these 24 are now under Demo cratic control. Republican ascen dancy in New York State may now be looked upon as a thing of the pa6t. - The Charleston News and Courier offers a handsome premium for the nearest guess to the correct number of bales of the cotton 4 crop , in the United States In l88-0. The state- tnent of the Commercial and Finan cial Chronicle is to be the authority. A second premium offered is a copy of the News and Courier and the Sunday Courier for one year; a third the Neivs and Courier one year and a fourth the Weekly Netc s and Courier one year. Any one can guess as often as he pleases but each guesa must be made out on a blank printed in the IXews ana Uourifr ana must oe accom panied by five cents in stamps or coin. . , .. The Charlotte C?ironielc has gone much out of the way to attack the afternoon newspapers. The article is undignified and uncalled for, and without one particle of justification. We must say that sofarasour obser- vation- extended the Chronicle and its editor have been treated with the greatest courtesy and considera tion at the hands of the evening papers in this State. There is, there fpre, no expuse for the attack which hai been made upon them. Possibly, a motive may be found in the fact that Mr. Wade Harriss has made a great success-of the Daily News, Charlotte's afternoon paper, and this success may be u thrn in the side of jt8-morning .contemporary. At all events Mr. Harriss has assum ed that to be the case and has been prompt to take up the cudgels in behalf of himself and his friends of the afternoon dailies throughout the State. He speaks in no uncertain terras and gets in some telling blows. The Chronicle makes no reply as it is probable already sick of the busi ness. "Diseased nature oftentimes breaks forth in strange eruption?, " and the result of it all is pain. Now Salvation Oil will send this very fain to the right about at the trifi g cost of only 25 cents. I Basses Better than ttullets. We find in the New York Jhrahl, of Saturday's date, a ; highly sensa tional report of an affair that is said to have recently taken place. It is dated from Columbia, S. C. inhere may be somejtruth in the affair, but we doubt it. At all events it i. prob able that the localities are wrong. Columbus county, N C. and Marl boro county, S. C. would seem more reasonable than Bladen and Darling ton. The j-epdrt is as follows:, " A sensational affair is reported from Bladen county, N. ('. For some time past Joseph EJIar has been payiny deVoted attention to Miss Mamie Cuthberth, the pretty daughter of T. M. Cuthberth. About a month ago it was reported that the two were engaged and soon tobe married. Suddenly Ellarceased to Visit Miss Cuthbert. Her father questionel her abont the matter. She broke down and told a talc which so enraged her father, that he swoi3 vengeance against the young man. Placing two large revolvers in his pocket, Cuthberth started in search of Ellar. Meeting n friend of the yonng man he told his intentions to him. .This friend begged Cuthbert to give Ellar a chance. Cuthbert thereupon agreed to tight a duel with pistols -.Ellar -was found and agreed to meet Cuthberth on the "field of honor." Darlington county, South Carolina, was selected as the place of meeting. The seconds . were chosen and 011 Wednesday morning the two men set out, each being accompanied by a friend. They traveled on horseback and arrived at the appointed place on the same day about 4 o'clock. Their friends examined the pistols to be used and were ready to step off the pace when Ellar spoke, Looking Cuthberth in the face, he asked. "What is all this about?" . 'You have deceived and ruined my daughter, sir," warmly replied Cuthberth. "How have I deceived her?" "In that you proposed to her and now decline to marry her." For a moment Ellar stood perfect ly still. "Mr. Cuthberth," said lie; I love your daughter and if you will forgive me for having wronged von and her 1 am now read v to make h e r a good an d f a i th f u 1 h u s ba nd. This proposition was agreed, to and the two men fired, their revols vers in the air. All parties again mounted their horses and rode back home. They arrived there about 9 o'clock and a preacher was sent for, while another party yent for the license. Ellar and Miss Cuthberth were made man and wife without further delay.
