NEWS BRIGHT AND CLEAN. 'UP WITH THE TIMES. Entered at the Postofflce at Wilmington, N.C, " as feecoad-class matter. , THE 3IONTAX4 STKAL. The neonle of the Uniterl State naturally look" to the Senate, the ; highest legislative body in the land, to rise njbore the prejudiceii of par ty and the expediences of political advantage and accord justice with an even hand. In times past this confidence of the people in their house of lords way have been justi fied, but it is not eo at the. present day. The illustration is in the case j of the four Senator, two from each party, claiming admission into that august body, the United States Sen ate. It is natural to suppose that party men will have party feeling but it is just as natural to hope for justice at the hands, of a body who ought to rise, in every particular, above party trammels, and legislate for the best interests of the people. Not because of right or justice, but simply because th balance of power was in their band.-, and the lines were too close to be comfortable, the Republican majority in the Senate has cast to the winds every princi ple of fair play, every vestige of po litical honesty, and has solemnly de clared the election of two men whoih no fair und impartial man in the country will for one moment admit were really legally chosen. The ex pedient of declaring that none of the candidates, Democrats or lie publicans, were lawfully entitled to the seats was presented to their con sideration but they were not willing to trust the issue again in the hands of the people of Montana, for fear that the claims of the Democratic applicants would be endorsed at the polls, and hence, with a shameless disregard for the facts in the case and with an utter contempt for the will of the peop!e,they have seated their own men. No one expected anything better than this from such unprincipled politicians as John Sherman, Ingall?, Quay and others, but that men like Gen. Hawley, Mr. Edmunds and Mr. Allison should jXemarlrable Keacuo. But the crime is not only one against honesty and purity in elec tions but it is against the beliefsaud the traditions of as whole country full of liberty-loving people. It is an example and an incentive to evil and corrupt methods which we fear will not be lost upon others. When Lthe judge steps from the bench, net only to shield the thief but to share in the proceeds of his rascality, then justice becomes worse than a farce it is in itself a crime. The New York-iS'tar gives vent to tho following plain language on the matter:' The Montana crime is consummat ed. The Republican claimants, who were not chosen to represent the Slate, have been sworn in as Sena tors iu violation of common deceny, common honesty and all the honor able traditions pf the United States Senate. For the first time . in qui history the council of tho States in the Fed eral Government has descended be low the level of a ward faction cau cus. That which local partisan courts refuse to do, because laiv and fact were against it. has been done by the only tribunal that can try on impeachment the country's highest officers. The local court gave true title td" the county officers duly elected in Silver Bow by the honest vote of Precinct Thirty four. The Republic's highest legislative tri bunal has awarded the Senatorial seats to those wbosehiwful selection that honest vote rendered impossi ble. . Such is the unprecedented crime of yesterday. The freedom loving world will await the swiftly coming retribution, premonitions of which are already plain in the recent elec tionsEast,Vesf,North andSouth, in chiding those inMontanait?elf. Those emphatic popular verdicts were influenced by detestation of the im pending iniquity against the Moun tain State as part of the conspiracy of political desperhdoes to perpet uate minority rule by packing the Electoral College. a w- ' The Spring Medicine. Hood's Sarsaparilla is a peculiar medicine, possessing, by virtue of its peculiar combination, proportion, and preparation, curative power superior to any other article. A Boston lady who knew what she wanted, and whose example is worthy imitation, tells her experience below: To Get w In one store where I went to buy Hood's SarsaparilLt the clerk tried to Induce me buy their own instead of Hood's; he told metheir's would last longer: that I might take it on ten days' trial; that it I did not like it I need not pay anything, etc. But he could not prevail on me to change. I told him I knew what Hood's Sarsaparilla was. I had taken It, was satisfied with it, and did not want any other. ... .. ,i When I began taking Hood's Sarsaparilla was. feeling real miserable, suffering a great deal with dyspepsia, and so weak that at times I could hardly, stand. I looked, and had for some time, like a person in con sumption.. Hood's Sarsaparilla did me so much good that I wonder at myself sometimes, and my friends frequently speak of It." Mbs. Eixa A.
