Bannerman, of Burgaw, was in the city, to-day for the first time wn several month 3. "We are glad to see that he has about en tirely recovered from his recent so vere sickness. . The Mt. Airy excursionists all re turned to their homes last night. Most of them brought Iheir provis ions with them but lost them over board on their trip to sea on Wed nesday, afternoon. Mr." James Berg has opened a beer garden at the corner of Seventh and Nixon streets. It is the only one in the city. . He has a very pret ty, comfortable place there and will be pleased to have all call upon him. Mr. James A. Biadley, a Wilming tonfan who removed to California some twenty years ago, is in the city on a visit to his sister, Mrs. S. Jew ett, aud his brothers, Mr. Richard Bradley and Mr. Chas. W.. Bradley. Another heavy raiu storm visited this section this afternoon. Hail also fell for" a few minutes. The rainfall wa3 .73 of an inch and the greatest "velocity of the wind, was 20 miles an hour, from the North east. -. , .". . .'. The Carolina Central depot at Cronly, a small frame building, was struck by lightning yesterday morn ing during the thunder storm which prevailed then and was entirely de stroyed by fire. The building was half consumed before , the fire was discovered. Fortunately there was very little freight in it at the time. The entire loss will not exceed $1,000 and on this there was ample insur ance. At Carolina Beach. The members of the Grand Lodge of Odd Fellows went down to Caro lina Beach yesterday afternoon on an excursion tendered them by the lodges of this city. They were Ac companied by guests, among whom were a number of ladies. The boat left here at 2:30, returning at 6 o'clock. A couple of hours were spent pleasantly at the beach, and on the return refreshments were pro vided. It was a very pleasant occa2 sion, and heartily appreciated by all who were present. The Aquatic Show. The number of those at the Ham mocks and Wrightsville Beach yes terday, drawn thither by the an nouncement of the Paul Boyton aquatic display, has been variously estimated at between 3,000 and 5,000 people. The display was a good one, approaching nearer to the promises made on the show bills than is generally the caser Capt. Boytonis certainly great in his spec ialties as are also Wallace Ross and Wm. McFall. Ten trains were run during the day and the last to arrive here came in after midnight. A New Industry. Mr. James F. Post, the well known contractor, is experimenting with the artificial stone spoken of by us some time ago. He has had moulds made and has turned out blocks of various sizes. This stone is made from granite and marble chips and cement and the tests to which it has been subjected have proved very satisfactory. It is not a simple arti ficial stone made from cement, and some of which is seen ou the streets now, but is a much harder and prob ably more endurable material. It can Jje made in blocks of any size and can be used for paving purposes as well as for building. Mr. Post thinks of experimenting also with shells as well as with bits of broken stone and is confident that he can manufacture as beautiful and as en durable a material as the famous coquino with which the walls of the famous Ponce de Leort hotel at St. Augustine were constructed. . ;W Sells ami Hammocks 0fK lift) to Si-no, CKOQUET fLCO SL-.BaU 15 Blt3. etc A1 , New Push and Pull Blind Hinges. What is it that makes women more smiling and happy-looking than men ? We meet them on the cars, on the streets, in the country, by the seashore, always smiling, teeth a glistening, eyes a dancing. Ah! the secret is they aim to please. It is an effort in many instances for them to Biuile, and were it not for a desire to look pleasing and pretty many would "never smile again.'' Why? Recause "in a large majority of in stances they don't feel, like smiling. They feel more like crying. With their nervous aches, weakness and bearing down pain?, life to them is a burden. What a gold-find to many a physician is a rich sic'i woman. Why should he aiiu to cure her and denv himself' the pleasure of pre senting his h'Ss with the usual regu larity. It seems from the following, that "the surest and, cheapest way for invalid women to regain health and strength is bv using Botanic Blood Halm (B. B. B.) Mrs. J. A. "White, 340 Wythe street, Petersburg, Va., writes: "1 have used B. B. B. with happy results, and others haye taken it at my ad vice and are delighted witli its cura tive results." J. N. Gregory, Butler Postoffice, S. C, writes: My wife had been under the treatment of several good physicians,, but conttnned in poor health, so L bought four bottles of Botanic Blood Balm, and it did her more good than those doctors had done her in ten years. She is now doim? her own washing, a thinpr she had not been able to do -for four 1 And Why Xotl? S wann and Nixon streets are in a decidedly bad condition and need proinpt attention. On these streets, between 'Fourth and Eighth, there isunothing but sand and a little sawdust would help to relieve the prevailing infirmity. There is an electric light on the corner of Swan and Fourth afreets but more are needed in that locality. A False Report. Thec was a rumor last "evonintr that & train on 1 1, r fins. non? f. R n i 1 ron d had gone through the trestle across the sound, and as a' consequence a great deal of uneasiness was felt here by those who had friends or relatives at the coast who had not returned to the city. Those who knew anything of the substantial nature of the structure and of the solid foundation on which it rests, did not hesitate to characterize the report as a canard, and so it proved. It arose in some mysterious way from the fast that the platform connected with the hammocks end of the Ocean View Railroad cracked with the enormous weight ot the immense number of people who were standing upon it. No damage was done and no one was hurt, but it was thought wise after this not to allow the trains to cross to the beach. The road trestle was not injured at all. Somebody lost a satchel overboard, which was re covered, and that was the extent of the disaster, beyond a straining of the timbers of the platform, which can be easily remedied. Grand High Priest T. Kev. I.ncien Holmes. The Charlotte jSewa says: "Rev. Lu cien Holmes, one of the best known ministers of the Episcopal Church in North Carolina, where the best parf of his life lias been spent in clerical and educational work, has found it necessary to place .himself under a physician for treatment. With this view he has entered St. Peter's Home and Hospital, in this city, where it is hoped the skill of the physicians in charge with the capital care given patients by trained nurses, will soon effect a cure. Mr. Holmes is well kno.wn and greatly beloved in Char lotte. He was associated with the Rev.HB. S. Brotisou in the fine school at Thompson Hall (uow Orphan age), and did missionarywork in thi and adjoining counties. lie greatly endeared himself to the poor of this parish by his earnest and self-icri-fieiner efforts in their behalf. For the past few years Mr. Holmes has been in. the South and West, but .more recently has been doing effi cient missionary work in Polk county, in this State." Mr. Holmes is an old Wihuing tonian. - He is a Sampsoniau, a nephew of Lt.-Geo. T. H. Holmes, C. S. A. He practiced law here.and afterwards taught school in connec tion with Hon. Geo. V.
