Personal:
We were glad to see our esteemed
friend, Dr. S. S. Satchwell, of Pen
der county1, on our streets to day.
Mr. J. Wright S ted man, who has
been absent from the city, for-the
last fifteen months, returned yester
day and was warmly greeted by his
many friends upon his arrival. He
is connected with the New Orleans
Daily City Item, and has Avon an
enviable reputation forone so young
as a newspaper writer.

into an altercation yesterday, at

trouble was occasioned by a dispute
over a game of billiards. White

investigation of the
Winston-Salein Excursionists.
The excursion from Winston-Salem,
under the charge of Rev Mr.
Conrad, mention of which has here
tofore been made, arrived here at
about 9.20 o'clock last night. They
were in a special train of seven
coaches, and there were about 500
ladies and gentlemen in the party.
The Salem Cornet Band of 12 pieces
accompanied the excursionists. This
morning at 9 o'clock they all em
barked on the steamer Sylvan Grove
for South port, Fort Caswell and a
short trip outside. The boat pre
sented a beautiful living picture as
she moved .majestically from her
wharf, with her perfect sea of bright
and smiling human faces reflecting
the th robbings of happy hearts full
of hope for a day of serene pleasure.
The day has been cool and delight
ful, and we trust that no accident
has occurred to mar the pleasures or
the day, and that they may all re
turn to night as happy as they ap
peared to be on their departure this
morning.

his able and zealous efforts the num

to become larger with every Sun

the need for a larger building, and
steps will be taken shortly to ma

We have received from Mr. George
T. Angell, No. 19 Milk slreet,Boston,
Mass., President of the American
Humane Education Society, a copy
of a book entitled "Black Beauty.
HisJ Grooms and Companions," by
Miss Anna Sewell. The book is the
aucobiographv of a horse, telling of
kind as well as his cruel masters, and
is an intensely interesting work
which should be read by every hu
mane man and woman who takes an
interest in dumb animals and would
see them kindly treated and cared
for. While the work avoids all
"gush" and effusiveness, it abounds
in graphic descriptions that go
right to the heart of loving and sym
pathizing humanity.
Happy Wedding Bells.
The bells of Grace M. E. Church
pealed merrily last night and soon
the entire seating capacity of that
house of worship was appropriated
by beautiful ladies and gallant gen
tlemen, drawn thither to witness the
impressive ceremony that should
unite in wedlock's holy bonds Mr.
William F. Penny anl Miss Carrie
Meier, both of this city. Miss Can
nie Chasten presided at the organ,
which under the inspiration of her
canny fingers, (no pun intended),
pealed forth beautiful and joyous
harmonies as the bridal party ap
peared at the church at 9 o'clock,
the bride-electenteririg and walking
to the altar by the western aisle,
leaning on the arm of Miss Sallie
Lumsden, and the groom-elect byjthe
eastern aisle, accompanied by. his.
brother, Mr. B." R. Penny. Arriving
at the altar the Jjappy couple knelt
and Rev. W. S. Creasy, pastor of the
church, soon united them in wed
lock in the beautiful and impressive
form of the M. E. Church. The re
ligious ceremony being concluded
the happy couple retired and, ac
companied by relatives, friends and
invited guests, repaired to the resi
dence of the groom's father, Mr. B.
F. Penny, No. 109 South Seventh
street, where they will make their
home for the present. Here a boun
tiful supper had been prepared, to
which all did ample justice. The
bride was plainly but neatly dress
ed, showing exquisite taste in avoid
ing the gorgeous apparel which too
many think necessary on such an
occasion, while the groom looked
proudly conscious of the rich prize
he had sought and won. Tlx; pres
ents were numerous, appropriate,
elegant, and some of them costly,
among which Ave have space to men
tion but a few of the more impor
tant. An elegant China dinner sett
of 125 pieces was presented by Messrs.
Goodman & Bro?., of Philadelphia;
a silver-pitcher by Mr. Lee Rosen
thal, also of Philadelphia; a large
and elegant French mirror, by J.
Harzeberg & Co., of Baltimore; a
sett of silver table cutlery, by Mr.
D. M. Baldwin, of Waterbury, Conn.,
and an elegant silver pitcher, by the
Atheneum Debating Society, of this
city, of which Mr. Penny is a mem
ber. Thissociety, to the number of
25, were present, all wearing the
badge they liave adopted. The re
ception broke np at a seasonable
hour, leaving profound wishes for

Painful Accident.
While Kim Hamilton, colored, was
i
riding in Mr. T. C. Craft's furniture
; cart near the Mineral Springs, yes-
terday afternoon, the horse
got
frightened and ran away, the dri
ver, Sam Bryant, colored, not being
able to control him. Hamilton
jumped from the cart while the
horse was at full speed, "and struck
the ground with such force as to
break his left leg, besides crushing
the kneo pan of the same limb. Bry
ant stuck to the cart and finally suc
ceeded in stopping the horse, when
ho returned to the injured man and
brought him to the city. He was
subsequently taken to the City Hos
pital for treatment. Hamiltou says
that the horse kicked him as he fell,
which was probably the caue of
the crushed knee pan.
