The Summer Term begins June 15th. Portrait of Hon. James Iredell. t Raleierh News and Obsemcr: The picture of James Iredell, of North Carolina, who was an Associate Jus tice of the Supreme Court of the United States, has been presented to our Supreme Court by Mr. Iredell Meares, of Wilmington, grandson of the distinguished jurist. It is an etch ing copied from a small painting in Mr. Meares' possession, and was ex ecuted by Mr. Albert Rosenthal, of Philadelphia, vJio is an artist of rep utation, and whose services have been engaged for the purpose of collecting and preparing the pic tures (in this mode of engraving)) of the Justices of the' United States Supreme Court, which are to illus trate "The Lives of the Justices of the Supreme Court," a book now in the course of preparation. This pic ture of Judge Iredell is said to be a very good one, and it is gratifying to note the increasing interest of our people in preserving memorials of our distinguished men. Blow Your Xoie. Alas, too often an admonition of a mother to her child. The poor in nocent has probably inherited ca tarrh and is not responsible for its sore and filthy nostrils. Did you know that tender, soft, thin , skin lining the nostrils, called the mucous. membrane, extends all over me body. Every organ in the system and every orifice at the surface has this thin delicate lining as a protec tor. So yon see what a fix the body is thrown into when the mucous membrane becomes irritated and in flamed by constant friction with poisonous matter in the blood. Ca tarrh, leucorhear and piles result frequently froai this condition of af fairs. These diseases are mere syrapj touts of impoverished blood. Now B B B or Botanic Blood Balm, will by .enriching the blood cause all such svmtoms to disappear. Give it a trial. Henry Reeves, Shellman, tia., i A. A special train has been arranged for. and this will leave Goldsboro directly on the arrival of the .train from Wilmington. The Convention will be called to order at 2:30 p. tu. ' "The Excursion To-Day.- The excursion of the Y. M. C. A. to Carolina Beach to-day was largely attended. The Oram ea rried down about 150 at 9:30 o'clock, and at 2.30. She had about 400 on board, including the W. L. I., who went dow to the Beach for their annual target practice this afternoon. It is prob able that a large number will also go down this evening, at 7 o'clock, on the last trip. The moon will rise about the time the last party arrives at the Beach. It has been a fine day for a trip to the seaside,. The Raccalaureate at Chanel Hill. The Baccalaureate sermon at the University of North Carolina, on Sunday last, was preached by Rev. Roberf Strange, of this city, and a correspondent of the Raleigh News and Observer says that it was very able and delivered in fine style to a large and most attentive congrega tion. Leaflets containing the ser vice for Trinity Sunday were distrib uted for the convenience of. those not familiar with Episcopal forms. The text was'Seek ye first theking dom of God .and his righteousness and all these things shall be added to you." He enforced this with such strength of lauguagearid beauty of metaphor aud aptness of illustration and well-told examples taken from the lives of devoted Christian phi lanthropists that many old citizens said, "it is the best sermon we ever heard." They were forcibly remind ed of the : presence and political triumphs gained by his father, Col.- Robert Strange, and his grandfath er, Judge Robert Strange,- and re joiced that such talents and elo quence are given to the service of Christ. All the friends of the Uni versity are triumphant at the sue cess of one of its boys who grad uated only eleven years ago. The cinging was excellent,' led by a" choir of students with DrY Weaver at the organ. Hointad and Loan Association The fourth annual meeting of the Wilmington- Homestead and Loan Association was held last night at the City Hall, with Mr. C. H. Robin son in the chair, and Mr. C. C. Brown secretary.? The annual report of the President-was read as follows: v To the 'stockholders' of the Wilming ton Homestead and Loan Associa tion: . ' , . Z '-' ' -" " The year that has passed since our last meeting has been a prosperous one with our association, and the report of the condition, made by our secretary . and treasurer, will, we think, be satisfactory to all. An ad ditional series of 500 shares was is sued June 1st, 1S89, and was prompt ly taken up, and during the year loans have been made on 301 of these shares, and 30 retired; leaving only 169 free shares in this third series. , An amendment passed at our last annual meeting allowing stockhold ers to withdraw or retire shares, aud to receive three-fourths of the earn ings of the stock, has resulted in the retiring of quite a number of shares, mostly in the first series. An amendment will be proposed at this meeting to allow the direct ors to force the withdrawal or retir ing of the shares of non-borrowers pro rata on th,e number of shares held by each one in case money ac cumulates and cannot be loaned, paying to each share retired the full earnings to the date of the retiring or to the first of the quarter preced ing. I think this amendment should be so worded as to allow the direct- ors to retire shares offered and pay the full earninxrs instead of three- fourths as now'allowed. This would probably obviate any necessity of forcing any retiring of stock. . It is clearly better to'adopt this for bor rowers and non-borrowers, than to, nllow monev to He idle. If there ar isnfficient borrowers to use the monej, u X. w Urenurcs-cinirr iuiuumm; j f 1 forcinsr. Whether outside organizations can do better as they must do to fulfill their promisesis a question for every one interested to decide. One change has been made in the Board of Directors, Mr. Frank H. Stedtnan having resigned and Mr. A. D.-Brown being elected in his place. Respectfully, C. II. RpBixoY President. Tbe report of the Treasurer show ed that the net earnings of the three series amount respectively to nine and one-tenth, ten and six-tenths, and sixteen percent, per annum on the amount paid in. An amendment was adopted to the constitution, as follows: "That when it shall appear necessary to reduce the number of shares not loaned upon in any of the series, the directors may, by a two-thirds vote, compel the redemption of unpledged shares; such redemption to be made by calling in from ench non-borrower his or her proportion of the num ber of shares to be. retired provid ed, that all stock soretired shall re ceive the full profits earned hy the same up to the date of retirement. All shareholders shall be considered non-borrowers who have not a real estate or stock loan of three-fourths Hi the amount actually paid to the association.' After the re-election of the pres ent board and a votejof.thanks tothe officers for their-prosperous manage ment of the affairs of the association the meeting adjourned. fJomiuencinpoii, Friday, the 6th inst.. and on every Friday thereafter until October 1st, the banks in tlus city will close at 12 o'clock, thus giv ing their employes a weekly half holiday during the Summer season.
