The Indiana State Democratic Convention to nominate candidates for State offices to be voted for at the November election will be held at Indianapolis, August 28, thus al lowing but two months for the can vass. The Convention will be com posed of 1,307 delegates. Chairman Jewett strongly favors a short cam paign. He is highly pleased with the Democratic organization throughout the Slate, which is far in advance of-what it was at this time in 1S88. New committees have been fully organized in eighty-one counties, and the other eleven will be reorganized by the first of July. Mr. Jewett predicts a sweeping Dem ocratic victory pi Indiana in Novem ber. . . The Louisiana House of Delegates has passed a bill compelling rail roads operating in that State to pro vide on all their trains separate, though equal, accommodations for whites and negroes. Such alaw has been for some time in force in Miss issippi and in othty Southern States, and has been declared-constitutional by the United StatesSupreme Court. Since 4he adoption of this law in the neighboring State of Mississippi, there has been a growing demand for its adoption in -Louisiana. .The New Orleans Iicettunc urges the passage of the bill by the Senate and its approval by .the aovenior as a move in the directiou of much-needed railroad reform in Louisiana. " - - m The Washington correspondent of the Springfield Republican says: "A Vill to. place Gen. Hanks On the re tired list with the rank of major general will probably be introduced in a few days in the Senate. Sena tor Hutler, of South Carolina, who served in the Confederate army, has interested himself in the matter, and it has been suggested that it would be 'i graceful thing for his colleague, Gen. Wade Hampton, who is on the Committee on Military Affairs, to in troduce the bill. The friends of Gen. Banks are becoming somewhat un easy over the delay in. 'the House Committee on Military Affairs and are disposed to push the matter in the Senate. The Massachusetts mem bers of Congress have made their wishes in regard to their venerable colleague known to Gen. Cutcheon, the chairman of the House Commit tee, and when the time comes they are prepared to bring a pressure to bear which he will find it hard to re sist. The new steamer of the Woerman line, which is to ply betwe?n Ham burg and the Congo, is to make a journey in seventeen days. Seven or eight years ago no steamer made the same journey in less than forty days, owiug to the many stops alour the coast. When the Congo Rail road is linished (in' less than four years) it will be possible to travel from New York city to Stanley Falls in the hettrt of Africa, fifteen hun dred miles from the coast, in about thirty-nine days, counting nine days from here to Hamburg, eighteen days to Matadi at the foot of the Congo cataracts, two days by rail to j Leopoldville, and ten days by steamer to Stanley Falls.- Then the tourist agent will step in, and-every visitor to Central Africa will not be called an explorer era rather larger word. hicn seems to be applied in this country to any agent of the Congo State who happens to come over here.
