For the decade of 1880 90 tne due

tire kingdom 2,759 duels, ino?t o

tner tne more duels, wnue in very
cold winter spells the figures taper
ed off. Thus seven-eighths of the
whole number took place in summer
and one-eighth in winter. Only fifty
deaths resulted out of all theseduels.
ninety of which were fought with the
sword, 2,480 with the sabre, and the
rest with the pistol. Ordinary quar
rels produced 730; press and politica
discussions, 1,322; love, 183; religious

place at Naples and the fewest at
Venice.
Tho statistics of lightning strokes
m Germany duriug the pust twenty
six years have been investigated by
flerr Kastner, who shows that tho
i
annual uuinoer oi cases nas more
than doubleil in that time. Last
year there were no fewes than 1,115
strokes. They are "most frequent in
the hottest months of the year-
June and July and the hottest
hours of the day of those ' followiug
them from 3 to 4 p. m. It appears
that the thuuder storms proceed
from the hills, and the pdrts of their
course most liable to be struck are
woodless and flat pieces, valleys or
rivers and low meadows near lakes,
while wooded and hilly districts
generally escape. This last deduc
tion is hardly in accordance with
popular ideas on the subject.
Most persons think that the boun
dary line between the United States
and Canada is imaginary, but it is
distinctly marked by cairns, iron
pillars, earth mounds and open
spaces iu the woods, from Lake
Michigan all the way to Alaska.
There are nearly, four hundred of
these marks between the Lake of
the Woods and the base of the.'Rock-
ies, the British putting a post every
two miles and the Americans pat
ting one between the British posts.
These are of cast iron, and on their
faoes are cast the words, "Conven
tion of Londou, October 20, 1818."
Where the line passes through lakes
stones, have been piled up eight feet
above high water mark, and where
it passes through forests the trees
have been felled for the space of a
rod.
