Gen. Early at once refused to believe this and' Gen. Hampton put in au indignant denial. .Recently, at the Lee monument unveiling in Ulchiuond, Gen. Noble, who is Presi dent of the Farmers' Alliance in New Hanover, speaks for himself in another column. Whether he speaks for the Alliance remains to be seen. Capr. rioble intimates very plainly that both he and the Alliance will vote for Republicans (negroes) who will pledge 'themselves for. alliance doctrines rather than for Democrats (hite men) who will not. .Well, every one to his taste, say we.; and we believe that s what the old woman remarked when she kissed the cow. We like the fanners, and the farmers seem to iiKe us. nut we don't care to fall into line at .the crack of the wjiip. The Democratic party has not only never antagon ized the Alliance hut it has always been the farmer's best friend as, in- deed, the farmer.has been the hone and sinew and strength and much of the brains of the Demooratic par- ty. The party has never antngon ized the farmers and there is no rea son why the farmers should . antag onize the party. The fact is. to be candid, the farmers are the party, very largely, in the South. . They can control legislation through that party, and only through.it. Any attempt to do so-outsidc of that'or- gauization shows a failure to appre ciate the situation, as it actually ex- sts. - . . It is to be built by the Atlantic Coast Lne. and is to run from Bar- gaw to, Dunn, in Harnett coanty, connecting there with the Fayette- ville ofc Wilson branch of the WJ & W. H. R. A very fine country will thus be opened up. The surveyors are in the field and this means that the road will be built, and at an'ear lyday. Indeed, the A.
