Chaffee, Signal Service Observer, furnishes a summary of the weather conditions in July, from which the following is taken: The mean barometer for the month was 30.07; highest, 30.30 on the 30th; lowest. 29.73 on the, 3d. The mean teraperaturewas 77; J highest, 92 on the 8th; lowest 58, on the 11th. We find in the Greensboro Patriot an account of on affray which oc curred at that place on Wednesday; evening, between two young paint ers, bothsaid to be from this city, which may result fatally to one of the young "painters. ' Young J awes, is, we think, a j sonlof Capt. F. M. James, but we. have no recollection or kndwledge of the other man. " It seems that both'the young men were iu love with the same girl and that she i had discarded James for Pleasants. 'This caused a quarrel between them some H days . ago and Pleasants moved to mother. hoard ing place. r- Yesterday evening, says the Pat riot, James came to where Pleasan ts was at Work on Clegg's House .in South Greensboro and renewed the quarrel. Becoming , exasperated at some remark juiade- by Pleasants, James seized apiece of .scantling and struck him a murderous bio w.knock itig him down. As Pleasants picked himself up, he drew a barlow knife and rushing upon James began cut ting him to pieces. One thrust or the knife entered the' tjhest and penetrated the lung. Numerous wounds ware inbicted on the sides and abdomen. After the cutting Pleasauts walk ed up street and told officer Whit tington that he had cut a man badly iu self defense,! and wanted to sur reinler himself after the man liad been attended to. Mr. Whittington went on oat to see after the wound ed man andPleasants walked around to the Mayor's office and waited un til beTreturned J' He was lodged In jail and a preliminary trial is being held as we go to press. I Pleasants says that as he rose af ter being knocked down with the piece of scantling, James rushed upon him with drawn knife and in flicted an ngly cut on his hand.
