We publish the following by re quest and it will be read with spec ial interest in view of the fact that the date for Mr. Jones' appearance; here is drawing on apace. It itf from; the pen of Rev. C. N. Donaldson, of; Norfolk: j - j The Rev. Sam Jones closed a (series: of evangelistic meetings in this eity Iast night of ten days' duration. J was glad of the opportunity of hear ing him for myself. I missed hear iuir him once "oniyv and regret I that.- The tabernacle' built for him seated about seven thousand. It was lulled each night to overllowjiig, with two thousand standing 'without. .Much of the time I was on the platform near him. I looked and listened at tentively and sympathetically, ami here is my honest, sincere conviction of the man ami liis'worK., i Sam Jones is the bravest and joiit lest, iuosteloquent:.and consecrated minister of Jesus Christ I ever heard and his work the most thorough I have ever witnessed. i I -The powers of darkness in this city never received sucn a snociv, and the kingdom of light more ii SDiration. .1 am not of those who would measure a mans powe,r in visible or immediate results, r but even these have been great, not less than one thousand souls beinii the estimate of. those brought to Christ during these!. memorable ten day. Sam Jones is the avowed enemy to shams, and every wicked way, and the loving advocate anil ttiend of the true and good. God-has given him to us and may He stand by him till his work is finished. It was thrjlllng to see an audience last night of height thousand risto a man, and say many raising their hands "Come back to our city a year hence !' One of our wealthy business uieh has offered jpne thou sand dollars to erect a permanent htiildinsr in the citv nrovfded J3ro Jones will hold meetings in it secutivelv for five years. I ho con- e it will come to pass. jJarKened npmes have been made happy; mothers re joicing over j the prodigal boy's re turn; many,! very many, broken-hearted penitents have found the peace'of tfod; pastors liave felt the girdings of new power, and him dreds of wandering ones restored to the fold. Oh, that ministers and people would cease to criticise those who are tryfng to lift this5 ftillen world to Heaven, and would them selves enter the conflict. At the last day, Ave may bitterly regret the stones we threw, but surely not; the work and toil we gave to rescue poor publicans and sinners whom Christ died to save.- Mr. Jones us a great preacher, measured by tne profound convictions made by his preaching. He is intensely earnest, and this earnestness gives a" charm even, to his I humor and sarcasm. The crowds laugh, but they weep as often, and after the laugh invaria bly there remains a practical trith. Underneath all, you feel the warmth of a great heart in love with men, and longing for their eternal free dom. . . I . No man can criticise justly t;us wonderful man without hearinghim: without hearing him consecutively till the close of his -meeting?. Hs first sermons are largely den uncia torv, but wheb the great audience is awakened and moved he becomes pathetic and tender. This was true of Christ, of Peter, and of all ie great reformers of the world, 'iiirri to Feter s sermon ueiore uip inryug on the day of Pentecost. It has two divisions: 1. -A revelation of tneir awful guilt asithe murderers or tne Prince of Peace; 2. The offjr of liar don oir seeing their repentance.
