" The large barge float of the C. F.
& Y. V.IR. R. - was put to practical
use yesterday afternoon for the first
time. Six cars were placed on it at

Marie Ot the six cars but two were

there are two tracks on the : scow,
with a sheltered space between. Its
use will greatly facilitate the hand-

, A Runaway Sensation.
A sensational, runaway occurred
this morning on North Front street.
A horse, "attached to a buggy, both
the property of Capt. T J. South"-
land, was hitched to a post in the
neighborhood of the Gem saloon.
He became frightened, pulled back,
broke the halter ana started in a
mad career up Front street.' He
turned into Chestnut then from
Chestnut into Third and brought up
opposite the City Hall with the re
mains of the vehicle dangling at his

The Fire This Morning:
The alarm of fire this morning at
1 o'clock, sent in from box 35, was
caused by the burning of two one-
story frame houses on Market, be
tween Tenth and-' Eleventh streets.
One of these, owned by Mr. W. T.
Daggett, was occupied by Jane
Thompson, colored, and was insur
ed for $450, in the German American
represented herj by Messrs. Atkin
son &m Manning; the. other, owned
and occupied by L. Moore, colored,
was not insured. The occupants
saved nearly all of their household
