Springer, the enterpris ing proprietor of the Central Wood and Coal Yard in this city has now in operation a machine for splitting wood, and the way it does Its work is simply wonderful. Wai ters, who died at Culpepper, Va., on Thursday, arrived here Friday night at 9:55 and were interred at 11 o'clock Saturday. The funeral services took place at St. James' Church, of which for so many years previous to the war the deceased laQy was a mem ber, and were conducted by the rector, Rev. Robert Strange. The interment was in Oakdale. The pall bearers were Dr. A. J. DeRosset, Hon. O. P. Meares, Col. Jno. W. At kinson, Col. Jas. G. Burr, Hon. A. M. Wadded Vol. Jno. L. Cantwell, Mr. Josh. G. Gazette has this to say of the Washburn. & Ar lintoh Show, which is to exhibit here to night: The company attracted attention to the show's notable number of horses and performers, by a pro cession through a number of streets, and created a favorable impression, which! resulted in a generous pat ronage of their evening exhibition at Agricultural Park. ,More than 3,000 people attended he show dur ing, the evening, and barring the lack of pleasant weather, a verdict of satisfaction wash gained. . The acrobatic corps of the company, in cluding the Brothers Vernon, of mid-air celebrity, a slack wire per former of great expertnessv and Lowell I, a wonderful contortionist, won special plaudits, notably mer ited. j p County Alliance. Mr. Weaver, who has accept ed the position of .Assistant Rector of St. James' Church, has arrived aud entered upon the discharge of his duties. Dr. Weaver he is an M. D, but liot a D. There lie became infiinate with a priest of the Episcopal Church and desided upou taking lioly orders, lie is a tine musiciau and will give special at tention to the choir of St. James'. The Pawnee. . The new steamship built by Messrs. W. P. Clyde & Co. for trade with tli 14 port, the Pawneev arrived here about 7 o'clock on Saturday niim. due is a line ooat. with a wooden hull, and staunchly built. She is under command of Capt. ' The reports of correspondents of the Weekly Weather Crop Bulletin, issued by the North Carolina Ex periment Station and State Weather Service, co-operating with the Uni ted States Signal Service, indicate' that the week ending last Saturday has been one of the most uufavoraH ble of the1 season. Over the entire 1 State during the first five days cloudy, drizzly weather with cold northeast erly winds prevailed, which notonly j has retarded or stopped outdoor farm work of all kind?, but has in jured uugathered crops to a consid erable extent. Killing frost is not pro bable before October 10th, by which time it is hoped that there will be few uugathered crops which can be Injured by it.
