There was a good audience at the

entertainment. The play of "The

audiences. Last night's perfonu

the most successful ot the season,
thus far. To-night "The Galley

will be presented and we trust that
there will be a large ajdience pres"-

amusing farce of Joshua Whitcomb

is a holiday issue' .with- lots of pretty
little "talelets"! suited to the season
but with enough of solid matter to
preserve the centre of the intellec

S. A., goes for Lord Wolseley on'the
Gettysburg question and Gen.Truui
buU, V. S A., refutes his foolish
critique on Shiloh. "The Colossal
Power of the United States in the
20th Century" is a thoughtful earn

written by a Confederate, officer who
saw the fight, throws much light on
this ofrn exed matter. There are va

of which we hive hinted or spoken,
and the departments are full of good
matter. The editorial, as usual, is
especially good. Belford & Co.,

A very pleasant entertainment
was given at Luther Memorial Build

seafaring. men in port. It "wns got
ten up and conducted by Rev. P. W.
E. Peschau, and the programme was
wisely varied, the selections, good
and consisted of recitatjons'aud vo
cal and instrumental music. There
were a goodly number of ladies and
gentlemen belonging to the city
present, and we were glad to see a
large number of -hardy-looking stran
gers in the audieiice whose bronzed
and "weather-beaten"' features gave
evidence of uianj a . hard-fought
struggle with the turbulent waves
of the ocean in its nncrer. It was
pleasant also to notice that they ap
peared to appreciate the kindly
hearts that prompted and carried
into execution the plan for Afford nig
them such a cheerful and inexpen

ily enjoyed and generously ap
plauded. Those "who furnished the
music' did exceedingly well, both
