For some time past he had been quite sick, with an attack of the grip, but had imprqved lately and was so much better yesterday that? he sat up for a short time. During the af ternoon, however, and ohly a short time before. he .did, he complained of feeling much worse and a mes sage was hastily dispatch ell for a physician. He first located at Southport, but afterwards, in the year 1882, re moved to this city, where he has ever since resided. He had j been in charge of the Cape Fear river works for fourteen years and had seen the depth of water here grow from 74 feet to 16. j Death has made sad havoC in the family in recent years. Mr. Bacon leaves a widow, two daughters, one married (Mrs. W. B. McKoy) and four sons. One of these is in Florida, one in Massachusetts aud one is abroad. The two former have been telegraphed for and it is hoped will arrive here in time for the funeral. ! Those who knew Mr. Bacon will realize the fact that one of the uiost gentle, genial, honest hearts among us-has ceased to throb. Modest and retiring in disposition, he was thor oughly uevotea to ins proiession and ever since he came among us he has been an enthusiastic worker for the best interests of the Cape Fear" river and Wilmington.
