Tht Little Tycoon la AaneTlilr The Asheville Citisen gives glow ing account of tbe perf or manes given on Friday and Saturday even ings of last week, and "ventures the opinion that in no other oity, large or small, oonld auoh a programme be placed on the boards by amateurs." Of tbe young ladies of Wilmington who took part in the opera, the Citizen says: "It is needless to say that those who have met them dur ing their short stay here have been completely won by their many at tractions, and they will leave behind them many warm friends and ad mirers. "Miss Annie DeRosset in the lead ing character of Violet, "The Little Tycoon," ia charming in every way. Her voice is rich, and remarkably sweet. She sings with much feeling and expression, and when added to this is her beauty and skill as an actress, there is little to be desired in- her performance of the part Her rendition of the two songs '"Tell Me Daisy" and "The Moon Song," elicited rounds of deserved applause, and she was enoord several times. Miss Amoret B. Cameron as Miss Hur ricane, displayed exquisite grace and a remarkable talent for acting, ap proaching many of the best profes sionals in vivacity and finish, and far exoeeding them in grace and dainte ness of expression. Her entrance at the opening of the third act in the Japanese dance is the embodiment of grace, and was received with great applause. "Miss Jean Cameron and Miss Car rie Myers of Wilmington, assisted in the chorus, performing their parts gracefully and skillfully, and show ing thorough drill and attention to their duties. i he Georgia, Carolina and Nortbern. In an article on this new through line the Wall Street News sums up the matter thus: -'It requires only a momentary glance at the map to show that the Robinson system has determined to break up the monopo ly that the Richmond Terminal has had of tbe traffic between the North and South along the Atlantic coast. Only a short time ago the entire is sue of bonds for the building of the Georgia, Carolina St Northern was readily taken in New York, Philadel phia and in London. The Seaboard & Roanoke, extending south through Virginia and North Carolina, has been a handsome paying property for years, because it has not been over capitalized, and it can earn money at rates which would not meet the fixed charges on some parts of the Richmond St Terminal sys tem. The Georgia, Carolina St North ern will form a link in a through line from Portsmouth and Norfolk via Raleigh to Atlanta, where tbe Geor gia railroads center. The line will be a shorter one than the Richmond & Danville, and will have independent connections at Portsmouth and Nor folk with the Bay Steamship Line to Baltimore and tbe North. It is easy for the Richmond Terminal people to scout this new competition, but Mr. Robinson has the advantage of own ing bis road, and tbat road has such a large surplus that it can without difficulty stand a considerable loss on tbe new line, if there should be any. This road pays 10 per cent, dividends per annum, and besides that, carries over a surplus in excess of the amount of dividends which it pays." nisfor's ( oars Louis Hall, colored, charged with stealing a hog from Council Foster, was arraigned before the Mayor yes terday, and at the conclusion of the hearing was required to give bond in the sum of $100 for appearance at the Criminal Court or go to jail. Maggie Davis, colored, was fined five dollars and costs for disorderly conduct. Louis Jackson, colored, charged with rescuing a prisoner from a police officer at a row in the Hollow a week ago, was fined $50 and costs, and fail ing to pay was locked up. Josh Halsey, colored, was fined ten dollars for disorderly conduct. .union a Century o a A correspondent of the STAR, wri-" ting from White Lake, in Bladen county, mentions tbe death at that place on the 7th iost. of Mr. James Carroll, in the 97th year of his age, and adds, "Truly a good man has gone to his God." Caniionary Signal a Cold Wave. Cautionary northeast signals were displayed at this station and at Charleston and Morehead City yes terday for a storm which worked up the coast, and was central off shore near here Sunday night. There was no gale, but a very decided fall in temperature. Quite a cold wave is working down from the Northwest, which probably crowded off the cyclone. The tem perature here fell from 79 degrees at 3p.m. Sunday to 47 degrees at 11 p. m. last night. Signals were taken down at this station at 10.30 p. m., the "hoist" order expiring at that time. A Good move. Alderman Post, of the Sanitary Committee of the Board of Aldermen, yesterday instructed the Health of ficers not to allow the reel horses of the Fire Department, when working on the streets, to be taken more than a distance of five blocks from their respective engine houses. This is in tended to prevent horses being overo driven and to keep them where their services may be readily available in case of fire, as recommended by the Chief of the Fire Department.
