Henry ueorge is lucky, uut ot a Xew Jersy estate that was left him supposed -to be worth $17,000, he succeeded in getting $318 after he had wound with the lawyers. Harrison undoubtedly needs some one to "help him run the Govern ment," but that crazy young Russian who came over for that purpose isn't exactly the kind of help he is in need of. The sale and manufacture of beer in this country is increasing at the rate of 3.000.000 barrels a year. As the importations of Canadian barley have fallen off more than one-half the brewers must have discovered something else that beer can be squeezed out of. The sun seems to be the subject of some unusual activity which is said to be the cause of disturbing influences on our planet. Son Rus sell has been somewhat active, too, lately and his cavortings with his mouth and pen have caused some serious disturbance in Republican quarters. Gen. Grosvenor, of Ohio, has got his reward for coming down and out from the Immigration Commission. He has been appointed an agent of the Treasury Department to visit Europe in the interest of the World's Columbian Exposition, a nice job, which will pay as well and last longer. We are in receipt of the premium list, rules and regulations for the second annual Fair of the Lumber River Industrial and Live Stock Association, to be held at Red Springs, August 12, 13, 14 and 15, 1891. The devil has been trying it for a long time and although he has had the active and zealous co-ODeration of his Republican associates the Dem ocratic party is here and kicking and giving him a livelier tussle than he ever had. A colored orator at the Columbus Convention, in behalf of the colored voters of Ohio, seconded the nomi nation of Mr. McKinley for Gover nor, which was received with great enthusiasm, but it didn't occur to these enthused white. Republicans in behalf of the colored voters of Ohio to nominate a colored man for any thing. Their responsive enthusisam didn't go quite that far. Total rain fall .0. WILMINGTON, N. CM FRIDAY, JUNE 19, 1891. LOCAL DOTS, Items of Interest Gathered. Here and There and Briefly Noted. An excursion from Rowland, N. C, is expected here to-day. . Half-holiday this afternoon for the up-town merchants and banks. Excursionists to Carolina Beach report the fishing good and sheephead abundant. The street sprinkler is doing good service; but one is not sufficient to cover the ground. 4 A pleasant shower last night cooled the atmosphere and lowered the mercury several degrees. A balloon ascension and para chute-drop is on the boards for this af ternoon at the Hammocks. A subscription list for the fund for a monument to Jefferson Davis was opened yesterday at the Produce Ex change. A festival and lawn party was given last evening at the City Hall, com plimentary to the Colored Teachers' As sociation. Work on the artesian well at the Hammocks is progressing satisfac torily; the boring has reached a depth of about eighty feet. The dog days are approaching and there are vet many badgeless dogs" of high and low degree around town. So far only 49QJtadges have been issued at the City Hall. Colored excursionists from Sumter, S. C, in large numbers, were in town yesterday. Many of them went to the seashore, and all left for home at 9 o'clock last night. The roof of the kitchen of the Island Beach Hotel was on fire Wednes day night last, but it was extinguished with a few buckets of water and the damage was slight. The C. F. & Y. V. R. R. Co. announce special rates between Char lotte, Durham, Fayetteville, Greensboro, Henderson, Maxton, Raleigh, Weldon, Wilmington and Winston-Salem for the Fourth of July. Round trip tickets be ing on sale at all stations July 3rd and 4th, good to July 6th inclusive. HIBERNIAN EXCURSION. Another Pleasant Day at Carolina Beach. The excursion given yesterday by the Hibernian Benevolent Association was well attended; the steamer Wilmington on each trip down carrying many ex cursionists. Prof. Miller's orchestra furnished music for the dancers and re freshments were served by a committee of ladies. Many of the excursionists enjoyed the surf bathing, the beach being thronged all day with bathers. The surf was ex traordinarily high, greatly enhancing the fun. At night the dancers filled the pa vilion, and the spectators were treated to an Irish reel danced by four members of the Association Messrs. Dan'l Sheehan, M. Judge, Jas. Hume and John Sheehan. The trip up the river by moonlight was enjoyed to the full by the merry crowd that remained for the last boat, which reached the city about 11:30 o'clock. The Hibernians have cause to be grat ified with the success of the excursion, which was one of the most enjoyable of the season. Over seven hundred went down on the boats during the day. High temperature prevailed yesterday at all stations in the Wilmington dis trict; the Imaximum recorded being 96 at Florence, Cheraw and Weldon, 92 at Goldsboro, Newbern and Lumberton; 90 at Wilmington, Raleigh and Wades boro, and 86 at Charlotte. Close of the Eighteenth Session Exercises by the Pupils, Eto. The exercises completing the eigh teenth session of the Cape Fear Acade my took place yesterday morning. During the past week the classes have been examined in their various studies. Those who passed a favorable examination, showing themselves pro ficient in their studies, were awarded certificates to that effect. John Mcbachern has been absent from school only a half day during the session. Under the excellent management of Prof. Catlett the Academy is more pop-. ular than ever, the past session having been one of the most successful in its history. Pupils who have entered col lege from this school have done well. and a number of young men of the city who are engaged in successful business here, received their education at the Cape Fear Academy. Mr. A. M. Scales, Prof. Catlett's ef ficient assistant, has been engaged for the next session.. KNIGHTS OF PYTHIAS. The Grand Lodge of North Carolina in Session at 'Charlotte. The Charlotte Chronicle says the 21st annual session of the Grand Lodge K. of P. was held in that city Wednesday last and was attended by knights from all over the State. There were two business sessions, one in the forenoon, the other that night. After the session of the night the Lodge adjourned to the Central Hotel where an elegant banquet was tendered the visiting breth ren by Rathbone, the local lodge. There, both knights and ladies fair, as sembled round the festive board, and the scene was one of brilliancy and en joyment. The toasts of the evening were as fol lows: "Welcome," W. B. Dowd; "Our Order," W. S. Cook, G. C. "Grand Lodge," T. D. Meares, P. G. C. '!An Ideal Knight," Mr. Harker. Among the visitors were: Thos. D. Meares. P. G. C; W. S. Cook, G. C; C. D. Benbow, G. V. Appointment. Mr. Frank L. Meares, of the reserved corps. W. L. I., having been tendered the appointment of Assistant Inspector General of the N. C. State Guard, with the rank of Captain, has accepted the same. The appointment has been confirmed by the Governor, and Capt. Meares will at once enter upon the discharge of the duties pertaining to the office. Mr. Meares served as an active member of the W. L. I. for seven years, from the ranks to Captain, and has since been on the reserved corps, ever ready to respond to the call for duty. His appointment will gratify his many friends and give pleasure to his old comrades of the Guard. Fourth of July at Greensboro. The Star has received an invitation to attend the celebration of the Fourth of July at the Guilford Battle Ground by the people of Greensboro. Hon. Kemp P. Battle will deliver an oration on the life and services of Gen. Jethro Sumner, of N. C, and there will be civic and military displays and other public festivities. Hon. Jno. A. Court room arid in fact all parts of the gov ernment building were thrown open yesterday for the inspection of the pub lic. There were many visitors during the day, including a number of ladies. The admirable arrangement ot every thing and the handsome furniture and fittings were very much admired. From the tower a beautiful view of the city and surrounding country was had.
