HISTORICAL AND CHRONOLOGICAL TABLES, ; .And a variety of Miscellaneous Information and Sta tistics, by C. II. WII.KY Number 3 is a new and revised edition of the North CaroHiia Reader, first published in 1851. Numbers 1 and 2 jus: issued, complete the series, which is, as a whole, cheaper than any other series of Readers in the United Slates, and as complete. The Editor (Piof. Hubbard) in his Preface to Num-^ bt>r 1 deems it jnopcr to allude to a few of the peculiar a lv.intages aimed at by the Superintendent of Common Si hools while making efforts to have this work com- I pleted. These are, I 1. Tht tnrounnjeintnt v/ a fediny of telf-dtptndm*$, ! and the enlistment of popular sentiment in behalf of ! the State and its institutions. It was not thought im portant, however, to have more than one number of ; the Readers of merely a local interest, i 2, T' r.iii'di/ ikf I'cii tnrywhere coriplained of in com- »:"ii nrli'jiilx, tJ u jierpctuiil change in text books; an ex pensive habit, and one which injures the Schools bj preventing the children from being classified. A se ries of home Readers, it was supposed, would be oer- tainly used, an t this great evil thus avoided. h'loiiomi/, tne popular system of Readers being too long and being made so often merely to add to the jirofits of authors and publishers. This series is to consist of fewer numbers than those gen*>rally used, and it is believed that these numbers are sufficient, while if the system were uni versally used in the State, the sum saved to parents and children would amount to several thoasand aellara annually. 4, T" put in the hands of children learning to read com- j.-.sHinns snjirientl;/ familiar hut not of the character called ch'lihrli compositions, cuntaiuiug, iu lessons easy enough for all ages, correct specimens of style, interesting in m.'itter, and inculcating proper morals, and religious in.'truction. The prices are, for No. 1, 25 cents; No. 2, 37J cents ;itid .No. 3, 75 cents. .A liberal deduction from these juices to .Merchants and School Teachers. E. J. HALE k SON. FBvetteville, July 2‘J.
