Ftre Intfur'nnce* llTK refer our readers to tlie nnniial statement of tlio Vf .Etna Iiisuranoe (^miprtny, of Hartford. This suo- ce.sgful institution was incor{H>rate»l by the Legislature of Coniieoticiit in 181i>, with a perpetual charter. It.s capital is and its accumulations exceed 0()1) inoTT. making its entire assets over ?l,:5()0,t>00, in vested as detailed in the statement referred to. These result:- indicate tlrit during the periotl of nearly forty years since its orpjuir.nlion. (without a single change of its chief officer.) its husiness has been conducted with jutlgment and prudence. It has been thus far sticcess- ful in an eminent degree, discharging, as we are in- foriued, all its obligations by the payment of about tm million liolhrt for losses, without asking a day s delay in any instance. It has had but little litigation, notwiih- standing the luuneuse number of transactions made. In onler tu attain as much cfrtuinti/us ]>ossiblc in such a b»isiness as insurance, it has been the practice of the Company, for sev%ral years, at great labor, carefully to classify and arrange tJieir risks into about (ifty distinct classes, so as to ascertain t!*e amount in.sured on each class, tlie amount of premiums receivel thereon, and the iimount of losses upon each. This clas.siticaiion. extend ing over a long period, and covering propevty to a very large amount, furnishes reliable data, and presents a sound, substantial basis of actual e.xperience, upuii which to conduct its business. Insunuue is not a matter ot luck or clirtiice. as many suppose: its hazar«ls are ascer- taiii.nble. and its principles capable of being reduced to a system, the practical working and results of which are as certain as that of any other busine-^s. The .Ktna Company, by adhering rigidly to its system, and j>lacing its business ujhhi a healthy basis, lias obtained the con fidence of the community to an extent surpassetl by no other Companj’ in the U. States, and has increased its business and its income from year to year with a steady growth- One great source of its security is the wide distribution of its risks—a policy which it pursues with great stricuiess—limiting the amount to be covered in each U>cality. 15y this course it has passed, with coiu- parative impunity, through some of the tnost sweeping and destructive tires, which have swallowed up other Cv'iiipanies less cautious in their business. It is a system like this, based upon experience, which gives stabiliiy and soundness to a company, and to the assured con fidence ami securit3‘.—Haltimon I’n/riot.
