I RUMOR j Fame, in its bad meaning, or one of its bad mean- 1 iugs, the same with Rumor, has been the subject of every poet’.s satire, who has had occasion to touch upon it, it is freequently treated as a person, and is most generally represented with a trumpet from which it blows t'orth lies to all the * points of the compass. Virgil has given a lull I length portrait of it, which we subjoin, in Dry- j den's translation: ; “The loud report through Lybian cities goes I Fi»me the great ill. from stuall beginnings grows— Swift from the first and every moment brings I New vigor to her tiightp, new pinions to her wings. SooB grows the pigmy to gigftntic size; i Her feet on earth, her forehead in the skie^. j Enraged Hfainjl the god?, reveug«‘ful 8»rth Produced lier last of the Tit*nian birth. Swift is her walk, more swiff her winged hast*, .V monstrous phantom, horrible and vast. As many plumes aa raise her lofty tlight, i So «ary piercing eyes enlarge her flight; ! .Millions cf opeaing mouths to fame belong, ■ And every mouth is furnished with a tongue, .\nd round with listening ears the tlying pliigue is hung. ■ She fills the peaceful universe with cries; j No slumbers ever close her wakeful eyes; ; By day, from lofty towers her head she shews, ; And spreads through trembling crowds disastrous news. I With court informers haunts^ and royal spies; Thinga done relates, not done she feigns, and mingles i truth with lies. ! Talk is her business, and her chief delight i To tell of prodigies and cause affright ’’ j jEneid •ith. i The pigmy size of Rumor in its inccptimi, the I small beginnings in which it originates, its rapid j growth and the portentous bulk to which it at tains, is here .«!ct forth with equal spirit and ac curacy. Every inhabitant, and every .sojourner of this city, has had ample opportunities within the last week to verify the excellence of the portrait. 'I'here has been no end to the lies which Rumor « has been continually spreading from her iron trumptet. They are stuck to, too, with the most astonishing pertinacity. Smollett gives us an ex ample ot the manner in which Rumor dilates and expands as it moves along. It was reported that an old gentleman had vomited six black crows in a sudden spell of illness. The authority was u'iven up. When appealed to, he said he liad only mentioned three. It was traced back until it dwindled dowt> to a single black crow. The investigator still did not give it up. He followed it until he came to the original propagator, who said he had only mentioned that the sick man had thrown uj) something as black as a crow. Rumor is like the mustard seed mentioned in Scripture, , if wt! may make the comparison, without irrev erence.) It tifows and expands into an enormous tree, that ob.scures the very light of the sun, by the fitue it is talrly planted. Most of our ruinors come troiu persons ealing themselves couriers. . Whether they are really such, we do not know It is probable that iome of them are, and that tinding everybody all agog for news, they merely exercise what they regard as innocent ingenuity, in testing their capacity for digestion. Others :ire certainly not couriers. But every rumor by ^ whomsoever invented, is indebted for the size it attains to each separate transmitter. A “courier" teli> some wonder-loving citizen that a skirmish has been fotight, in w'hich the Vankees lost twelve i men 'I'lie citizen tells his neighbor, adding a little to it. Each new hand adds his quota, until at last the dozen swell to six thousand. Yankee prisoners are no sniiill hands at a rumor. Irotn tliem came, no doubt, that notable one which was current a few days ago, that McClellan had pre pared to throw 5U,OU0 shells a minute into Y'ork, when it was evacuated As this is a fair example by which to e.'^timate the size to which a rumor tjjay grow, we shall take the trouble to analyze it. 'I’he Yankee shells, they tell us, weigh about 'JUil pounds each. 'I'he gun that throws them weighs about 2O,UU0 pounds. As both gun and >hcll are so heavy, we do not think the latter could be tired on an average oftener than twicc a minute. To perform the feat indicated, there fore, it would r«(juire ■J5,UU0 cannon. As they are so heavy they could not be oraggedinto posi tion by less than a dozen hor.ses each, which would give ;;*UU,UUU horses tor the guns alone, leaving out the ammunition, which is no small item, since each shell must be tired by forty pounds of powder, making for shell and powder 240 poundt each, or tor the whole .')G,UUU per minute, 12,000,000 per minute, 'fhen it xrould take a dozen men1;o man each piece, or i>0G,0UO men to man the whole 25,(iUU, Suppose the bombardment to last an hour, 'I'll 11 in one hour, .McClellan would have tired ;it our linos, three millions of shells, or 600,- UitU.OUO pounds of iron, and P2O,O(>O,(K)0 pounds of powder, .‘'^upposo it lasted twelTe hours, he would have tired thirty-six millions of shells, 7,2UO,(M)0,0(i0 of pounds of iron, I,SOO,OO0,O0(i pounds of poxrdcr. If McClellan had bombarded A orktown, would’nt he iiave made ‘"a noise in tlu‘ worldy’’—Hichinoii(l iJisitutch.
