I tJwfland :n/f (he CoWm Policy.—The editor
of the Savannah Republican ha.t! presented, in a
series ol forcible and lucid editorials, what would
seem to be the long matured policy of England
in reforeuec to American slavery, and .-lave grown
' cotton. He sketches the e- urse of fe liovern-
mcnt since this rreat staple reached a point of con-
troling imporance to theconimcrce oi tlie world, and
sthowo that the steady aim has been to break down
the cotton interest of tho South—to break down
slavery, and thus, by annihilating the only other
' important source of supjdy, secure to British in*
' terests, by means of the East India product, a
' monopoly throughout the world of the growth,
• the trade, and the nianufacture of cotton. The
writer forcibly ask^, if, in looking to England for
friendly intervention, the Soutli has not been
j blindly deluding lit-r.^ielf with false hope.s—if
. England is not, in fact, IntrimicaUj/, the most
; bitter, detf-nnined, and dangerous fue to our in*
toiests and institutions. Tlie dependence on
the Southern Si.c.cs for cotton has been galling
to th'? pride, and alarming the prudent forecast
of Engl.T,nd, and she has a thousand motives for
desiring to emancipate her.'clf from it, and by the
same Idoiv relieve herself from langer of rivalry
; tn the cotton manufacture.
K. !V Battle, W. W'
The Ditchimj Sysftin.—Jackson scorns such
ignoble policy. Although the commander of %
comparatively small force, he does not break the
! spirit oi his soldiers by inaction, or degrade them
by making them chnngo their bwordsinto spades
He ha.s made them feel that they are soldiers,
and shown to the wond that they are invincible
soldiers. His little army is the pride of the
South and the terror ol the North. Every man
oi that band of heroes feels proud to have it
known that he is one oi Stonewall Jackson's sol
diers
Oh for a dozen .Jacksons! Then would our
brave young soldier.'^ win their spurs, and the
enemy be driven back from the .s^oil they pollute
and lay waste. The Northern policy is a' long war,
an effective blockade and the ruin of our indus
trial interest.s Could the enemy produce a fam*
ine here, then conquest would be both speedy and
complete, 'fhe policy of the South is war in re
ality, iharp, active, bloody. If spades are to de-
cido this w,"r. then we had a« well give up; for
thf Yankee.s and the foreign laborers in their
rf nk.= can outwork us. That in Uieir vocation.
11 inns are to decide it, then the doom of \an-
' keedom is pealed. Such is the determined and
’ desperate ronrage of our troops that, when allow
ed to ti_ht, they charge through ditches, redoubt.s
and entr nchmcnts, sweeping everything before
them —liickmoa'l Whij.
