But if not disposed to tell its readers of this more cheerful of things, perhaps there were some advertisements whioh it felt obliged to pablish* Sot a line, fxoept in deed the Editor's advertisements of Tbe paper bbounds with these, asd that is evidently the explana tion of the present issue of tbe SUndard. First we have W W. Holden’s advertisemeni of himoelf as a candidate for Qovernor, next a long “Extract from an Oration de uvered in Raleigh, July 4th 186(», by WillUui W. Hol den;” then an extract “from the c^tandard of DK^ember r2i, 1868,” on the duty to ‘-piovi-le for the Soldiers’ r'amHies,” which is doubtless regarded as a cheap and effeotoal mode of securing tbe soldiers’ votes— it was wriitan in oonteaipUtioi) df W. W. Holden’s being a oandidate for those votes. Bat more than all these—in space at least—is an ad vertisement of upwards of four columns in length, sign ed “Conservative”—to whieh W. W Holden might as well have signed his own proper name, since there can be DO doubt of its t>eing his own production—on “Oov Vanoe’s Wilkesboro’Speech.” Taroughont this lengthy it not “strengthy” produotton, Mr. Holden dnla not a single merit in Oov. Tanoe's speeoh. Strange, that everybody else in the Confederacy thought it a great speeoh, a patriotic specou, £ ;neeoh that cheered both people and soldiers, and brougtit to the speaker nasber- lese invitations from counties at home and Brigades in tbe field, te come and speak to them, as well as to the people of the mountains Is it possible that the people and the soldiers oan all be fools, to be unable to see the nomberless faults seen by Mr. candidate W. W. Holden, and to fanoy that there is anything in the speeoh worthy to admire when read, or to make them desirous to hear it from the speaker’s own lip>7 Is all iue world wrong and onl/ Mr. Holden right; This is not the doctrine taught by Mr Holden—-except when It suits him. We have no intention to review this reply of .Mr Holiun to the Qovernor’s speeoh—w« will leave that for the Qovernor himself to do if ever Mr Holden shall give him a ohanoeby stating his objections face to facu upon the stump, where the parties would be upon an equality. Upen one or two points only will we otter a Word We h^ve heretofore had occasion to leiaark upon Mr Holden’s propensity to land and to abuse every promi nent man in North Carolina. la Qwv. Vance’s case, he kas made lAree (*hanges. First he, a Demoor>ii, np poied and abused Oov Vance, a Whig. Next, he hav ing tnrned Conservative, lauded Qov. Vance, who re mnined a Whig, we suppose, for Mr. Holien n/u eayi: “if he has ever said he was a Conservative, or that be belonged to the Conservative party I have y»i to he^^r of it.”l'. And now Mr. Holden, having for tbe tbiid time wheeled about, again abases the Qovernor, even asserting that he is a “Destructive,“ a sort of bidecus animal into which everyboay that .Mr Holden don’ fancy for the moment is nieiamorpnosed A -Dcstruc tlv«’ ? How oan thal be* bid not Mr ilcideu %ay, uo Longar ago thao the 25th of November Uhi, ‘-Vfc are friend of Oav. Vance, and expec to /. 4dA#r« ti' CoMertatif prineipleM’ New, forsooth )dr. Holden affirms that Oov. Vauuc uever r lo said he was a Conservative: In November, only four montht) ago, Mr. Holden professed to be so devoted to Q .v Vanoe, so entirely endorsed all toai tbe Oovesuor f ad and done, that he affected to be indignant when w« charged that be meant to oppose tiie (i^overaor’s re election. We have not a shadow o( doubt that he was then as much bent ou opposing him as 'ut is uuw. 1 fact, from the day that Oov. Viuoa accepted the uomi nation for Oovernor in June 1&«‘2, .Mr Holden b^s b hie enemy—secretly, of course, for the Oofernor wa« loo strong to be openly opposed We hava reason tor what we say.' But Mr. Holden optn'fy endorsed Oov'r Y^qoc never openly conn*lained of one single otfiolal or individual act—down to the *i6th November lag*. Nov, he cannot find that the Oovernor ever did any thing that was right. “The truth la.’’ says Mr. Hol den nov, “I have never kao«n any public funoiionary who has promised so much and done so little as Oov’r Vanoe has, on the subject of civil liberty. ’ * And eud- deniy, sinoe November last, th-'s Qjfernor iibs bccrm?, according to Mr Hoiden, a “po^.” of the .Adrait-i-iratiftn at B.ichmood!t has ueaaed to be t^ ‘•Conservat’ve.” in deed never wasa “C>noervstive,*’ “deceived tiie Con servatives,’ has ItiSi. the ‘*oon!i k-noe” of Mr Holdcol In snort, Qov. Vunoe sis.ud3 in the \Ki>y ot Mr Uolden’e reaching the Quberuatorial Chair. Therefore Oov'r Vanoe is not a true m^n in Mr Holien’s eyes. One other point Mr. Holden has suddenly discov ered, (inoe November—sinee his eyes have been en- tiglilinr* b| ilM rii»l pontioA oooopiad b| kUutlf It Is asHuini>d too laie.
