concentrated stink of all the skuake, pole-oate|
niggers, pitch, stilphur, rasped horses and borsee'
hoofs, burnt in lire, assafoetida, ferula, and bag*
weeds in tbe world could not equal the smell
emitted by these balls. Bat not only is the smell
in itpelf int>lerable, but it provokes sneezing and
congliing, and produces nausea, ronderitig it im-
pwsible for men to do duty within reach of it.
A single ball will impregnate the atmosphere for
fifty yards round, and the fetid compound, enter
ing everythinaj it touches, emits the stenoh for a
long time The opinion of all who witnessed the
experiments was that tbe ball waa a fair offset to
Greek lire; and General Winder and several
others of rapk who were present, expressed the
belief that it would prove more effective for driv*
ing off besiegers than anything ever iavented.
Be this as it may, if Richmond is ever threaten
ed by a sie^e, the sneezers, as the inventor face
tiously calls his balls, will form a prominent fea
ture io the defensive operations.”
Escaped Prisoners from Point Lookortt.—We
had the pleasure of a call yesterday from two
Oonlederate soldiers who have just arrived from
p..iiif lookout. There are about 10,000 prison*
crs confined on the Point. Among the number are
noarly 200 citizens arrested by order of Butler—
ui i?t of them old men from 60 to 75 years of age.
Som>.‘ of these citizens are in hospital, suffering
from the cruelties of Butler’s negroes. 'Fhej
hatl been tied to trees by the negroes and whipped
unmercifully.

cau»(id by looking at nothing but the white sand
and the wafer of the bay. Their rations consi*^

drclM. are very brutal, shooting the prisoners
without the slightest cause. On the 22d of May,
a nuuber of the prisoners were gathered around
the pump for the purpose of procuring water,
when, without notice, the negro guard deliberatly
fired into them, killing one and severely wound
