Marching all Wednesday nigbt, we arrived at

at their interdeotlon with the Baxter ro»d, nnd
placed in position under a very heavy fire of ar

the front entre3chm«nts, which had been taken
by the enemy on the night previonp.
In placing the brigade in position, Capt. ,Iohn
C. Pegram," A. A. (>., fell mortally wounded.
He was a brave, trencrous and noble man, com
bining in him elements of the gentleman and
officcr that are rarely met with even in our army.
The brigade feels his loss deeply. ■
We held this line on Thursday. That evening
late, the enemy charged our lines, only en^ap-iug
in our front the 24th North Carolina regiment,
commanded by Maj Love, and were handsomely
repulsed. They cha’^ged vignt up'to the works,
but not being able to pierce the 24th, they threw
down their a'ras and surrendered. We rested on

A Vimk'r Raid—A gentleman who arrived
this pl-ice, yt sterday morning, from Kiostoa,
gives ua the folluwing inforir;itian which may he
trrnerally relied od:
On Monday moruiag, a force of Yankee c&valiy,
250 strong, undt^r Col llipley, with two pieee!> ot
artillery, started out fr.'m Newborn, on the Dovti
road, in the direction of Kineton. On Monday
night they encamped at Core Creek, about lo mile?
this eid-; of Xewbern, where they fcpent most of
TuObd.'iy in bui'dini; a bridge acosB the ereek; and
advar ccd 0!i Tue.“>?ay evcLing, to 'Wi.se’s Fork,
nire n i’cs I clow Kinston, v-here the main force
encarap.^d f..r the night. About 2 o’clock A. M.
yeeterd >y n'orr ing, they moved forward a small de-
tachnicnt ' f tlicir forcc toi^arJs J-^ckson'.s or
Oobb’s milSs, '7bere they came up with two com
panies of Folk’s cavalry which, after some slight
^klrmi3hi3g, fell back nearly to Kinston, where
they were met and reinforced by two batteries
from Starr’s battalion, after which no farther de
monstrations were made by the enemy; but on the
contrary they woes pupp.^sed, at 8 o’clock yeuter-
•jpy morning, to be falling back.
That our people may not be unnecessarily an-
•jojo 1, we arc enabled to assure them, on most re-
’iahlc authority, that the entire Yankee force in
ihat « >etion whioh includes Newbcrn and Beau-
f-jrt, does not exceed eix regiments, and not more
1,800 men of all arms,
t; *!. Folk proceeded, early yesterday morning,
to the reported scene of action. On nearing
Cobb’s Mill he was some few hundred yards in
advnnoe of a body of his cavalry whioh accom
panied him. iie and hia adjutaat were permit
ted to piM on. but when the body of troops in
the rear re.iched the point where the yankees
were in ambu.sb, they were Fuddenly fired upon
and some five of them were killed. Col. Folk
»nd his adjutant were taken prisoners, unhurt.
On the noxt day (]d. Sta^r wiih one piece of
ariillery and a detachment of cavalry gave chase
but could not come within ^ ange ol’ them, though
almost within i?i«ht of the flying foe.
Goldsboro' Stafe Journal, 23^.
Jiid Still another Raid —Gen Baker received
inform-ition I?»st evening thBt the yankees are in
force in Onslow and were moviug on Magnolia
Steps were promptly taken to 1-Jok after them.
Goldiboro' State Journal^ 'l^d.
We learn from Capt. R T. Fulghum. of Qer..
Baker’s staff, that on reaching KenansvUle it
was found the yankeer hal fallen back to Jack
sonville, and afterwards eastwardly to Huegina'
farm. During the trip they committed the usu
al yankeo esccs^cs—stealing, burning ho’i-ses.
bridges, &c. And we almost blush to wr^te, they
did more—they captured a company of Col J«>k-
son’s cavalry The yankee foroo consisted of
two regiments (of cavalry we suppose) and two
piece.'? of artillery—Ib. 2ith.
