There shall be exempt ono person aa owner or agriculturist on each farm or plan tation upon which there are now, and were on tho 1st day of Jan’y last, 1'5 able-bodied ueld-hands, between tiie t.ges of 16 and 50, upon the following conditions: 1. This exemption shall only be granted iu cases iu ^v^lich there is no white male adult on the farm or j>lant3tion not liable to military service, nor unless the person claim ing the e.xemption was on the 1st day of Jan’y 1864, either tho owner and manager or overseer ot said plantation, but in no case shall more than ono person be exempted for one farm or plantation. 2.
