Of oourse, then, sopposiog that the Bedford 08*

pos8ible,) they must bring in annaally £300,000.
Ia 1823, we saw a catalogue of the rigbest mbla-
men, of that day, ia England. The Marquia ol
S^fford (the same with the Duke of Satberland
of this paragraph) was then rated at £350,000
annum, or about $1,700,000. Lord Groire-
DOr (now MarquiS of WestmiDSter) in thal. tatar
logue was placed second, and rated at £300,000,
or $1,509,000- Since that time the Ma^quia of
Stafford ha. added the enuroioaa estates of Satlier-
land to his possessions by marriage. Thej ex
tend nearly aoross the bind, from sea to aaa, is

country into pasturage for sheep, rendoring it

Of course, the author of this inhuman outrage is
a great hnmanitarian. He feels deeply for iha
negrces of the South, although he has no bowels
of compassioh for his unhappy tenants. The
Duohea*} of Sutherland waa the great patronesa of
Mrs. Beecher Stowe during the **Uncle Tom*^
fever*, and stands high with Exeter Ball. Dar
ing the visit to Mrs. Stowe, she wrote, or had
written, an address to the Ladies of the South,
oa the subject of slavery, in which she represent
ed to them the great sin of which they wera
guilty in holding slaves and encouraging slaTerj.
We do not recollect that she said anything about
the sin of expelling thousands of helpless funilies
from the homes which they and their tathan
had inhabited for hundreds of jears, with bo
other motive and upon no other pretext than the
determination to make more out of the land
than they could afford to pay for it. The Ddke
of Sutherland, exelu^ve of what he could make
by these lands, waa in the receipt, at tbe time,6f
several hundreds ol thousands of pounds ater-
ling, aod had therefore, no plea to allege but
