prevail at this conjuncture, we shall be convinced of the Truth of that Great Man's Observation, and be scarce surprised at any Extravagance or Absurdi- ty possible in the Administration of public Af- fairs. It will hardly gain Credit in future Times, that in so informed an Age as the pre- sent, a quarter Master of a Regiment; without the least learning or Abilities, and entirely unacquaint- ed with Business or the Affairs of Men, had been appointed to the important Place of J-ge of Vice Adm----ty of a British Colony. Whether this Child of Fortune has been promoted in this ex- travagant manner, through your Lordship's In- terest, or was adventurously ushered through a lower Channel, on some illicit venal Considera- tion, is a Mystery which in a little Time, I shall be able to discover. However, my Lord, I am now an old Man, and have with many melan- choly Reflections, during the Period of 40 Years past, regretted a Train of Grievances by which my native Country has been oppressed since its first Settlement. the Inattention of Government to its Improvement or Welfare, and the Want of every Royal Favour or Protection; I have la- mented a thousand public Evils, occasioned by hav- ing a Set of Men destined from Time to Time to sent, a Quarter Master of a Regiment, without the Adm....ty of a British Colony.
