) THE WILMINGTON POST. WILMINGTON, N. C, AUGUST 20, 1859. No blundeb was ever more generally con ilcmned, says the Albany Journal, than that inado by Mn$. Stowe, in reopening the fchamcful scandal concerninir Lord Bvron - and Iris wife. jThe world does not believe ;licr story. - Byron had no sister, j His half- i ' Sister,- ?Mrs, Lpigh, has always enjoyed a good reputation untiL now. Is it possible it. i i i Vt : mai sue couiu nave dccq bo miamousiy guilty as is now charged, and that Lady Byrpn, who knew the iact, never whispered it, when she was conniving at every sort of . means to punish or degrade ; her wayward husband, and jwhen the opposing parties were incensed klmost to the point of person al collision ? 'jThe assumption is ridiculous. Yet jSIrs. Stowe asks us to believe it upon the unsupported assertion of a maundering old woman, wljo has nursed her jealousy during neatly half a century, if Her story is full of blunders, of historical misstatements, of inaccuracy as to dates. It conflicts in important particulars with known and well established facts. It is nothing better than a romance a very silly, disgusting and pru rient! one, at that. ' Mrs. Stowc professes that her intention was to vindicate the memory i0f Lady By ron. Her narrative will have quite the op -posite effect. No one can read it without believing that the charge of incest was the hallucination pt an insane mind, or the in vention of a very wicked one. She says she wanted to cstopj the circulation! of Countess Guiecioli's memoirs. Instead j of this, she has advertised the book, before hardly no ticed It will now sell by tens of thousands. There is no conceivable good to be accom plished by Mrs. Stowe's injudicious effort but vast evil. 1 ' I The author of " Uncle Tom's; Cabin " and ". Oldtown Folks " might have been engaged in beitcr busincsa than this, of entering the graves of persons who long since passed away, and revamping all the scandals con nected with fheir lives. Her comments upon the character of Mrs. Leigh, and Lord Byron's daughter, Ada, are in the worst pos sible taste.. It will take her long to recover from the injury 'she has inflicted upon her own reputation.? The County Agricultural Society had a meeting Wednesday night in this city, and transacted considerable business. Nothing of great public importance however, but we tire glad to chronicle the meeting. The on Jy regret wo have in the matter is, that so little interest appears to be taken by the ' farmers. The future welfare of this coun try depends upon the farmers, ! and we are all interested therefore in their success. We wish every farmer in the county would be come a member of his home Society, and build up one that would njot only be a pride to them, but of great and substantial bene fit. It is of vital importance and as, we said above, we heartily regret that' so little interest is taken in it.- In November we will have the District Fair, iri which, we hope every farmer in New Hanover county Will participate. Let it be an occasion long to be; remembered. It is of small importance who is Gover nor of this State, compared to I the absolute necessity of improvement in our agricul ture. We cannot . afford to cultivate land upon the loose principle of long ago, we must, to compete with other markets, adopt all their labor saving machinery. If we could make cotton before the war and sell I - i - ; i - ' for small 1 figures at a profit, we must be able to do it now, and our only way is to cultivate more acres with the same number of hands. If the farmers will come togeth cr this fall, compare notes and gee what ma chinery has been used and the j value of it, The Western Sentinel published a few sensible remarks by mistake during the ab sence of the editor, from a speech of Vice President Colfax. A correspondent is fpry much surprised to ee such articles ,ik the .Sentinel ind calls tlie-tjiitor to task.4Arid now he editor comes down, apologises and Uh6ws hits hand." He lays : : .. It is true that negro suffrage is ar present fact. We opposed it, but be cause it 'is a fact, we re notr prepared: to turn round and eat purowri Words and say we are glad of it, and Euzzah for any man or party that proposes to make it perpetual. " We stick to the old Conservative party, that has been fighting Radicalism for the past four years, and we will substitute in place of opposition to negro suffrage, a plank in our platform advocating the Repu diation of the 'Piiblic Debt, both State, and National. " " The peopleare unable to pay, the taxes that are now imposed upon them, and it is either Repudiation or Ruin, . j , i We are aware "that the 1 Copperheads of the Noith, calling themselves Democrats" preach Repudiation, but now that it is be ing openly declared, to be the Conserva tive " policy we want Republicans to know it. Repudiation t That's their new dodge now, Repudiation both State and National. Ruination to the people because the men who forced the State out of the Union can not again rule it. We believe in paying our just debts, and paying them too as we agreed. When we said gold, let us pay in gold. The only Re pudiation we favor is the repudiation of such men as the editor1 of the Sentinel eat D at the late elections. Gettysburg. Our readers are aware of the meeting at the above battlefield during the past week to mark the various positions of the differ ent corps of both armies. All the leading Confederate officers were invited to be present to assist, and to meet the officers of the Federal army on the old ground. Most of the Confederate officers declined under various pretexts to be present, but the work went on of course.' We cannot say that we blame the South ern officers in declining to be present, though the invitation was made in good faith and the positions they held and the movements made, if properly recorded would have made General Lee's reputation greater than it is, if that were possible, but Gen. Lee's ideas that it is better to cover up the wounds and not perpetuate them in granite .monuments, is not to our taste. We want the monument erected, strong and substantial, a s a solemn warning to all coming generations, that it is not safe to raise the parricidal hand against the life of the Republic. Let the growing generation, who t talk loudly over their prowess, remember Gettysburg and hereaf ter try to live as become citizens of a com mon' country and give no more thought to rebellion and war. We who participated in it, have had enough let those who blus ter and talk war now remember Gettysburg ST -A. T E IVl E 3ST T Names. Naturb amd v Items, I: E.M. It seems that several points in New Jer sey are just now severely suffering from a scarcity 01 water, ana in some places, it is not only water that has given out, but tood also. At Enghshtown, in Monmouth coun ty, the absence of any rain for four or five weeks has resulted very seriously. All the cwells are dry or nearly so, and the water that ordinarily would not be kept in the houses a moment is now hoarded as a miser would his money bags.
