Mr. Morden gathered his harvest in

bushels of apples, and, what was won

It required a vast amount of labor to

money by working for Morden.

. And we must not forget our old friend
Morden. He lived to see the begin
ning ot manufactures in Illinois. . In
bis old age be would frequently ride for
miles along ihe banks of the Illinois
river, and as he saw the waters rushing
unimpeded to the Mississippi he would
say, regretfully: "What a pity that so
much power should go to waste! This
valley of tbe Illinois ought to be alive
with the mtisic of cotton and woolen
mills, the iifon foundry, the machine
shop. What a population of working
men, artisans, and laborers might be
kept in employment by the proper use
of this water-power; and what a mar
ket for our farmers! Shame on us that
we are dependent ' upon England for
our cutlery and qur cotton and woolen
fabricti O, that X could live to see tbe
raliey of the Illinois as it is destined
