ITKINLEY COTTON Southern Manufactures May fte Cut Off This Week. MEETING AT CHARLOTTE THE CONFERENCE tiieke sat urday will decide it, THE STAPLE KEEPS FALLING Stock Market Local and Professional With Scalper Transactions- -Wheat Opened Strong, But Closed at Opening Figure?. New York, May 12.-The cotton mar ket showed considerable irregularity to day, selling off in the forenoon, but rally ing* partially later in the session, with the market finally steady at a net decline of I@6 points. -The early weakness in cotton was due primarily to very disap pointing cables from Liverpool an view of the advance that took place in our market yesterday afternoon. -At ,tlie same time crop accounts, white more or jess conflicting, *ad a bearish average during the forenoon. loiter in the ses sion there was some rally on less favora ble weather predictions, pointing to indi cations of showers all over the cotton lH»lt within the next 24 hours. Much -of the time .1 unequal July contracts held a firm relation to the genera! market owing to continued interest shown by American spinners and exporters in spot t>otton. During the afternoon buying on Southern opdess ■ was ta feature, while room traders met the demand without hesitation. At the weakest interval the market to-day diiowed a net lose of 4(ci 4 ; points. E. B. OUTHiBBRT & CO’C LETTER. New York, May 12.—Wheat efliowed a continuation of the strength which has • characterized the,.market for several days and scored a further advance of 1 to lVi cents this morning, under the bullish in • fluence of firmer and higher markets with good foreign buying, continued drought in California. 'Prices advanced steadily : 1 to 114 cents iSsom the opening which were the same as last night. Covering 1 by belated shorts and Liverpool buying made the high prices. After this demand ■ was satisfied, Infill* rs began to take prof its. It was only natural that they should do so. and the pressure increased as the business progress* 1 !!. It was accelerated by falling off in the short demand, which was occasioned If the prices of spot and the nearby options, getting out of th“ line with exporters, views and limits, and as a consequence, prices slowly receded for all the options, the market dosing steady at the lowest quotations, which wer* the same as the opening and yesterday's dos ing. Com and outs closed steady with moderate trade, at net decline of "Vs to y s cent for corn, and unchanged for cits. STOCKS. The trading in stocks to-day was a rep et itior of yesterday Vs business. Aside from purchases of about 10.000 shares by London houses, principally of t nion a*a cific, . Paul and I.u ilsville, the trad ing was largely local and professional. In the morning the foreign buying m U n ion Pacific was the principal feature of the market, and the tea lers tailed on to the movement, causing the stock to *d vance 1 per cent. In tic- meantime, tie Grangers and railroad «i*ares wen- gen erally firm and advanced fraction ally in sympathj while ix the Industrial lis - Tobaceo showed heaviness on liquidation. After the*London market closed, and tte foreigners ceased buying, the traders at tacked the. market, bnt they made little headway except in Chicago Gas, wbiyi broke to 81% on general selling, on a mis apprehension that the defeat of the Hum phrey Street Railway bill in IlfinoL- House had some connection with Gftr bills. It was shown that this was not the case, the - 6Ad.: rallied. It was largely a traders’ market and the fluctuations were in the in a n the result #1 the efforts to scalp each other of the narrow fluctu ations. COTTON. New York, May ILL—To-day’ market i for stocks was almost a rei>ctition of. ves -1 teirday’s, whatever strength there was ! gesnerally manifested not out Las ting-very ( long the close of the Ixmdon exchange aiw! the strength reflated from there, i which was, however, less marked than yesterday. London also was again a purchaser of securities in this market, though not in so large a volume as yes terday. Some 1 »crcha# *s were also said ! to be* for Holland account. The stocks , IsHight by the foreigners were Union : Pacific, St. Paul and Louisville and Nash ; vilte; also Norfolk and Western. Some i sales for foreign account were also m:i<h*. j 'Hie selling movement in Sugar and Chi -1 <-ag© Gas, became heav* later in tl*e*Say, ! Sugar being sold on rej*orts of jeopardy to tK* sugar schedule of the amended iar ; iff ln!l and Chicago Gas on reiorts of the ; unlikelihood that expected beneficial ! legislation couhl Is* enacted in Illinois. • This caused such sharj* declines in those ! stock* that the depressk* spread by sym pathy through the list. The dullness of trading was in jxirt due to the expected announcement of further gold shipments, but tl» se were not forthcoming, beyond ; an increase of only $50,000 by a house : which had already announced $500,-©'X) I by to-mxrrow’s steamer. Whatever skip ' incuts may be made by Saturday’s steam ■ v r are *>w expected to lie small, as wi s ■ foreshaiiowed last night. There is, in i fact, a very light demand for exohanv* i and no v?ncourage®ient to offer bills a ; gainst gvld. It is evident that a very small quantity of these would break lb exchange market below fine jirofitable lioint for gold shipments. What ship ments mar be forthcoming <v-ii special or d*rs from Europe of course remain open to conjecture. The considerable pur chases of our securities by London yes terday and 1 >day has a tendency to weak en exchange. An increase in the exports frenn the port of New York, for the week of $1,540,24*., somewhat offset the enor mous import* of last week and the govetn ment receipt* from customs from day to day tdiow tbfct this week’s imports will hardly reach, anything like lart week’s figure*. On the other hand, Ne.v York •exchai&ge on Pxiris shows a tendency to Harden and tlv- Paris rate an London declined slightly again to-day as a result tfl the upward movement of stocks to-day and the subsequent reaction, net changes a»e for fine most part verj narrow. The | restricted character of the market. is 1 shown by the fact, that Sugar amDChi j rtijn Gas «bsorloed over one third of the i total ilealings and as these two shocks 1 were notatey depressed the y constitute an effective drag on the market. The foreign purchases <xf stock* were estt . mated at from 12,00 G to 15,0 M) shares. ; The total sale of stocks for the day a muounfted to 127,536 shares, including American Sugar Refinery 25J»(K); Bur lington and Qu.iney 7.G00; Chicago Gas J Tr. Ree. 23,200; St. Paul pr. 10.100: ' Wabash pr. 11,14)0; New Jersey Central -6,000. The boiwi mark**t maintained a firm tone generally with purchases for foreign account again noted. Gams of slight fractions were generally made in the Lead ing issues with the speculative liens ab sorbing the bulk of the dealings. Im provements of I@2 per cent were scored in scene of the inactive middle grade .clocks. The aggregate f ransaetions wove $1,125,000. I Governments were dnll hut a harden ing tendency was apparent in the new fours. 'JNie sales were $32,000. BOND Q DOTATIONS.
