Mesu I ur response,' was offered. The openin declines i were generally recovered ut one time, but the bank statement forced the market' down again. Trud- 1 ng was not active of important at any time. ; The showing of the janiw '.vas complicated by the;lnclusijiv of the figures of a new member of the clear ing house, and this I was held ti ac cpontifor a' large part of tns Increase in . loans and' deposits. The decreas j In cash, however, was somewhat larg er, than expected, owing to some oute go to Canada. .The firmer tone of tht market .towards the end o the week confirms .the ooorer showhK of the banks. The fact, that Union pacific continued reactionary today- was against the market and the substitu tion of "Reading for. a sustaining forc- proved " inadequate. As poor return of net earnings by the Harriman la clfics, 'ev York Central and Southern Railway received futher discussion and were-not a helpful factor to th? market. 'The .report that most of New York '.Central's - heavy operating ex penses for the quarter was found In the pay .rool negatived the assumption that special outlay for improvements ww" responsible for the showing and gave It increased influence as an in dext of genefal conditions. Report from the wheat country of weather conditions revived the influence of tnt . uneasy feeling over the crop pros pect. The last prices were in the neighborhood of the lowest. The tone of the bond market also was heavy. Total sales of bonds par value, amounted to $898,000. Total sales stock today 360.30 shares, including: Copper 39.600; Su gar. 200; A.
