Many wells have been dry neavly all that time, the small streams (except occasionally) have been dried up, and the larger streams in the same con dition. The Cape Fear river, be tween Fayetteville and Wilmington, has continued so low all that long time (except at long intervals) that the boats could barely navigate. The oldest boatmen say that they have never known the rivor to remain so low for such a long time. But, as above stated, the prospect at this writing is that we will have water enough for all purposes, and we fear that we will have a very wet winter. NEWS. A Mean Thief. Concord Sun. Foot Cut Oft". On Saturday an accident occurred at Apex, whereby a colored employee of the Raleigh and Augusta road lo&t his foot. The man was employed on Capt. Crutchfield's material train, and got off the train while in motion. He did this safely, but attempted to take his basket and bag from another flat-car. In doing this ho s'ippod and was thrown under the car. His foot and ankle was crushed so as to necessitate amputation. News and Obseiver. ii A Murderous Assault. On last Sunday, November 7, Pink ney Betield, a farmer, living two miles south of Lenoir, assaulted his wife with an axe, inflicting three se vere blows on her hf ad, and another in her side, breaking several of her ribs. He waa only prevented from killing her by the interference of his wife's parents, who fortunately, came to her rescue.
