'1 3 -KOR THE FRH AM) 1(0)1 F. Ilunllty lu Milk. A. 15. Allen writes as follows lo the N'. V. Tribnui". Dr. Law cs says that food influences the quality of milk, which I believe is the conclusion of all who have made careful experi ments. Hut it has been the opinion of most persons that water drank by the cows in largo quantities lowers tho quality of milk. Hut Dr. Luvves says, after careful experiment with a herd of thirty-one, that tho drinking oi more or less water had no effect on the quality of the milk, provided the rows were well fed. One cannot, therefore, water tin) milk by giving the cows much more water than they naturally crave, P. re .vers' grains, however, and m.ishy or very succulent food, sour meal mixed wiih water, fiilatie, i r acid I'oo Is, increa -c the quan tity of milk at the exp.Mi-e oi quality, by rendering it. m ire watery. Mulching to keep th - fait lean.--Hefore the fruit begins to ripen mulch the ground among th- plan's with short hay or straw, orgr. s mow ings from lawn, or anything of that sort. This will not only keep the fruit lean, but will prevent, th ground rom drying or baking, and thus -engthen the fruiting season. Tanbark an also be used as a mulch. A bed iianaged in this way will give two full nips, and should then be spa-ied or wed down, a new nno having been h meantime prepared to take its 1 nee. Wrap (rowing. The prollts of grape growing, like : -i-s - frmn the growing of all other tuts, depend verv largely on the size :d quality of the fruit put upon the market. The largest clusters and miest berries and the highest quality an be attained only by the best methods of culture, manuring and ..aining. To accomplish thee results i the best way, plough the vineyard . irlv in the spring very shabow ay .ot more than two inches deep. Soon iter this the rows should be hoed a d , en" l of gras. and weeds, and : . able intervals the ground should I be worked over with some very shallow ; working cultivator, merely scraping or ' .scaritying the sun ace. At this ' time 1 prefer to sow broadcast over ! the viiievanl not Il-.-s than one ami one-half bushels of rye per acre, cul- , tiviiting it with a shallow working j cultivator and allowing it to grow the ' rest of the season. This will take po-- j session of the ground to tin- exclusion of weeds, looking much nicer and ; forming a plea-ant an 1 cleanly cover- in-.' at grape picking time, and by win- ! ter it affords quite a covering to catch ; and retain the snow, thus affording much protection to the roots against the injurious 1 fleets of frost.
