If tbe people think this is a good law they can thank their members of tbe last Legislature for passing it : and, if they think it a bad or oppres sive law, then they must blame their legislators, because the journals of fhe Legislature do not show that any member voted against it! In this county, Sheriff Brewer has decided to indulge at his own risk our tax-payers as far as possible. He has only advertised the lauds of those persons, who ate in arrears for taxes prior to 1887, except where the delinquents for 18$7 own land bat $$ personal property. He will levy on cdi sell the personal property of those who owe taxes for 1887, and if thai sale does not pay the tax he will then sell the land. So that, all tax payers izr Chatham, who have personal property and owe taxes for 1887 only, can yet pay without hav i'tg their laud advertised. too much on subordinates for the execu tion of instructions, be devotes him self too much to looking after the details of his bureau, One of the interesting local events of tbe holidays, was the celebration of the 89th birthday, of Mr.-W. W. Corcoran, the noble philanthropist, who is esteemed as the first and fore most of Washingtouiaus. While he is bowed with physical infirmities, his mind is as bright and his interest in current affairs is as lively us thirty ! years ago. This benefactor of his race is possessed of the rare gift of growing old gracefully. Another event was the presence of Mrs. Cleveland At a dinner given to 800 poor children of the capital. The first lady of the land seems in her na tural element when doing deeds of ainuuess ana cnarity. ...... Whipped by Girls. Gekeva, N Y., December 28 Marvin Phillips, a school teacher and a recent graduate of Harvard College, was conducting Christmas exercises in the village of Lodi on Monday evening, and arose to address the Sunday school children, when Miss Jennie Baxter, a young lady residing in tbe village rushed Upon him aud etruck him a number of blows abont the head vjand face with a rawhide. Phillips was nearly blinded by the Diows and fell, wnen he was whipped more severely by the young woman. Several tiersons dragged Miss Baxter away, whereupon Miss Lulu Young, a dashing aud attractive cousin of Miss Baxter, seized the hide and dealt Phillips several more blows. Theie was great excitement in the crowded ball aud the women and children screamed Phillips was finally taken to bis room, where a physician treat ed his wounds. The young ladies left tbe hall sur rounded by their girl friends. Miss that they were denied that privilege. 1 S. Ashe, Rev. W. A. D. G. W. Ward, Dr W. R. Smith, Rev. ihomas A. Stoi.e, Dr. James A. '1 here is no doubt, however, that the f aimers of this State are as well off as those of auy other State, i 1 the South. A large proportion of lands in the section east of Greens boro are mortgaged, and the system of crop leius has proved a very pow erful' drain upon - agricultural vigor and prosperity. But some progress has been made this year. There was a. sharp decrease in the number of mortgages, land this is a favorable sign. Barnyard-Brothers. Frcin tbe Summervllle (Us.) News, D. Up to this time they have never been separated over twenty five yards and each night tbey lovingly roost on the same limb side by side. They never quarrel or fight, aud to such an ex tent does their love go that one can not fiap his wings and crow without the other following suit.
